Salem still has free paper leaf bags

November 13, 2013
Salem News

SALEM - Salem city residents have another chance to pick up some free paper leave bags from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the council chambers entrance of city hall.

After this final distribution, city Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst said any bags left over will be available for pickup anytime city hall is open by contacting his office at 330-332-4241.

He's urging people to come and get some bags, noting they're more environmentally-friendly and easier for city crews to handle since they don't have to open them up and remove the plastic bag once they arrive at their designated dump site. With the paper bags, crews are able to pick up more loads in a day.

"That allows them to cover more of the city so the leaves don't stay on the curb lawn as long," he said.

The bags were made available through a pilot program with CCH Environmental, formerly known as the waste district, which also provides the recycling dumpsters next to the fire station.
