EAST PALESTINE - George H. Powell, 64, of McClure Road, died Friday morning at UPMC - Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, where he had been a patient for the past several days.
George was born March 18, 1949 in Kittanning, Pa., a son of the late Perle and Nellie Chandler Powell, and had resided in the East Palestine area for the past 19 years.
He retired in 2010 as a senior general foreman for the car department with Norfolk & Southern Railroad, and its predecessors, Penn Central and Conrail. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Vietnam War, and later with the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he had attended OCS, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.
He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church.
George is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Recupero, whom he married March 20, 1971; two daughters, Meagen Powell of Harrisburg, Pa. and Tori Powell, Cleveland;
three sisters, Diane Tack, Butler, Pa., Mona Rupert, Kittanning, Pa., and Phyllis Gattos, Cranberry Twp., Pa.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, East Palestine with pastor Rev. Mark McTrustry officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Rimersburg, Pa. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
