24th Holiday Bazaar planned at Salem Memorial Building

SALEM - The 24th annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Bazaar will kick off the holiday celebrations in Salem this weekend, with free admission from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Memorial Building.

"It's a great holiday weekend in Salem with Light Up Night on Friday and the Salem Christmas Parade on Saturday. We are close to both events and I hope people will keep us in mind as an option while they're out celebrating," Recreation Supervisor Shane Franks said.

He's trying to add more attractions for Saturday, but on both days, the gym will be filled to capacity with all kinds of crafters, bakers and candy makers with items for the holidays and all through the year. The Memorial Building is located at 785 E. State St., with parking to the rear of the building.

In an effort to bring in more visitors, the schedule will include some featured attractions both days, including lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in room 23.

On Friday, the schedule will include Diana's Delectable Chocolates presenting "The History of Chocolate" at 2 p.m. Diana Kindler, a North Canton chocolatier with 30 years experience, will talk all about chocolate.

At 3 p.m., Michelle Holodnak of Scrapbooking by Lisa will demonstrate and teach "Card Making and Scrapbooking Techniques" that anyone can use to create a keepsake. Holodnak said scrapbooking may seem a little overwhelming at first, but with a little bit of time and effort, anyone can do it. People usually have a general idea of what they want or something they've seen before. She said it's not complicated or hard.

Her presentation will be hands-on so people should bring photographs with them that they want to use. She'll provide the glue. The demonstration will cover the basics.

Members of the Salem High School Concert Choir will take the stage at 4:30 p.m. and Santa Claus will visit from 5:30 to 7 p.m, both on Friday.

On Saturday, Holodnak will return at 11 a.m. for an encore presentation of "Card Making and Scrapbooking Techniques."

At 2:30 p.m., the drawings will take place for the chinese auction and 50/50. Each vendor is being asked to donate items for the chinese auction.

The lunch menu for the bazaar will include sloppy joes, pizza, hot dogs, coney dogs, vegetable soup, chicken noodle soup, baked potatoes, cookies, chips, coffee, water, hot chocolate and pop.

Other events in downtown Salem this weekend will include Christmas Light Up Night at 7 p.m. in front of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce building and the Salem Christmas Parade at 1 p.m. Saturday, co-sponsored by the chamber and the Salem News.

The parade will line up at Salem High School and step off from F.E. Cope Drive and proceed south on Lincoln Avenue to East State Street, then turn west and proceed through the downtown to Ellsworth Avenue where it will turn north and travel to the Broadway Plaza on Second Street and disband. After the parade, Santa will be at Consumers Bank on Ellsworth Avenue, along with SAM the Safety Squirrel until 3 p.m. Saturday.
