ZANESVILLE - Thomas J. Pastier, 80, formerly of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, following an extended illness.
Tom was born Aug. 6, 1933, in Salem, Ohio, the son of John and Thelma Hester Pastier.
He was a graduate of Salem High School where he played varsity football and basketball. His career with Thompson Newspapers spanned 40 years, beginning with the Salem News. He retired as publisher of the Zanesville Times Recorder. After retiring from Thompson Newspapers he worked for Sears for several years and volunteered for Good Samaritan Hospital. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Zanesville and a past member of Rotary.
Tom loved being with his family and friends. He enjoyed doing lawn and landscaping work around his home and being outdoors. He was an avid Ohio State and Notre Dame sports fan.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Donna (Neely); four children, Lori (Don) Kainrad of Ravenna, Tom (Lori) Pastier of Salem, Diane (Warren) Ackerman of Bolivar and Ken (Becki) Pastier of New Franklin. He also leaves seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Sally Davis of Salem; several nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at the Hillis, Combs and Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave., Zanesville, where a Christian vigil will be held at 4:45 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father Stephen Hayes as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.
