BELOIT- The West Branch school board Thursday night accepted two sizable donations for annual scholarships.
The board accepted donations of $20,000 each to the Thomas Humeniuk and Sisilia Humeniuk memorial scholarships, $1,500 annually for students pursuing further education in agriculture and nursing, respectively. The donations were gifted by scholarship trustee Thomas Moushey.
According to schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart, Thomas Humeniuk was a long-time farmer in the area and Sisilia Humeniuk was long-time nurse in the area.
"The West Branch school system is pleased to accept these donations and proud to award these scholarships in memory of two such outstanding members of the community," Weingart said in a written release.
The scholarships will be awarded this spring.
The board also accepted donations of $100 from the Damascus Methodist Women to WB SADD, $80 from Jostens for high school yearbook, $8,120 from WB Choral Parents for the choral trip and $200 from the WB Athletic Booster Club to boys basketball for medicine balls.
In other business the board approved supplemental head coaching contracts for the 2013-2014 school year to Shawn Alazaus, baseball; Tracy Wyatt, boys track; Nathan Heddleston, girls track, Elaine Bonar, boys tennis; and Jennifer Woods, softball.
The board also hired Jenessa Woods as a Title tutor and approved Rodger Sharp as a van driver.
Additionally the board approved a renewal of building and property insurance through Westfield Insurance Companies (Williams Case Insurance Agency) effective Nov. 6, 2013, through Nov. 5, 2014 at a cost of $65,660 (or 73 cents per thousand dollars of coverage), a 5.8 percent increase from last year.
Also at the meeting, the board recognized outgoing member Terry Criss after 12 years on the board with a crystal plaque. Criss did not seek re-election to the board and was instead elected as a Smith Township trustee.
The organizational meeting is set for 6 p.m. Jan.8 at the high school, with a study session at 4:30 p.m. President John Wallace was named president pro tem for the meeting.
