Trustees hold reorganizational meeting
FRANKLIN SQUARE - Salem Township trustees held a reorganizational meeting Tuesday morning and appointed Bill Heston as chairman for 2014.
He replaces Trustee Ray Heddleson who served as chairman for 2013.
Trustee John Wilms was appointed vice chairman.
Trustees also changed the regular meeting time from 7:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meetings are held the second and last Wednesday of the month.
County 40/8 meeting canceled
COLUMBIANA - The Columbiana County 40/8 meeting today has been canceled. The 40/8 haystack breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Jan. 5 at the Chateau on state Route 14. Cost is $5.
Library holding preschool craft program
COLUMBIANA - Children ages 2-5 and their parents are invited to the Columbiana Public Library from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 9 for a preschool craft program, free of charge. Pre-registration is requested, in person, or by calling 330-482-5509.
Free tax filing assistance available
LISBON - Free tax filing assistance through the Ohio Benefit Bank will once again be available at the Family and Community Resource Center, due to a grant from the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, home of the Ohio Benefit Bank, for the 2013-2014 tax season.
The Ohio Benefit Bank is an innovative online service that connects Ohioans with more than 20 work support programs and tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, child tax credits, and education credits. Clients can meet with OBB Counselors to file their federal and state taxes for free with a trained counselor, or they can file on their own at www.ohiobenefits.org.
In 2013, FCRC served 153 residents of Columbiana and Mahoning. This year, they hope to expand services to offer the free tax services to 175 residents. FCRC was one of 49 grantees serving 62 counties to receive this grant.
Residents interested in making an appointment to have their taxes filed or complete other benefit applications through the OBB can call 330-420-0044, leaving name and number. Someone will get back to you with an appointment based on your location. Tax clinic dates and locations will be announced in the near future.
Hanover Township trustees to meet
HANOVERTON - The Hanover Township trustees' meeting begins at 9 a.m. Jan. 4 in the township hall.
Food distribution scheduled Jan. 10
SALEM The Second Harvest food distribution will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 10 at the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. Participants are reminded to bring baskets.
Pricing, schedule offered for swim lessons
SALEM - New pricing and a schedule for Youth Learning to Accelerate your Potential for Swimming (LAPS) has been announced at the Salem Community Center. LAPS will now run multiple eight week sessions in 2014. The first session will run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. every Saturday, Jan. 11 through March 1.
Pricing is $55 for members and $70 for non-members. A swim cap is provided for new participants. Multiple child discounts are available. For information call 330-332-5885.
Dementia seminar planned in Damascus
DAMASCUS - Five to eight percent of all people over the age of 65 suffer from some form of dementia, or someone you know has been diagnosed with dementia. You may be feeling anxious or confused about what it means to live with dementia.
To learn more about this important topic, family practice physician, Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, will present a free educational seminar, "Inside Dementia," from 6:30 to 8p.m. Jan. 13 in the Canyon View Room, at the Damascus Friends Church, 28857 Walnut Street in Damascus.
Dr. Cohen will educate members of the community on symptoms, causes, types, treatment, and prevention methods of Dementia. Light refreshments will be served.

Blended family video seminar offered
SALEM - Faith Chapel Fellowship will host the video seminar series "Bringing Peace and Harmony to the Blended Family at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays from Jan. 3 through Feb. 7. The seminar was written by Dr. Kevin Leman, an internationally known Christian psychologist. Pastor Larry Paxson will facilitate the seminar.
The six inspiring and entertaining video lessons are titled: "Before all of us say "I do," "With these kids, I thee wed," "Blending without colliding," "Surviving the birth order blender," "Same language: Different dialect" and "Looking at life through your mate's eyes."
Chicken dinner planned in North Lima
NORTH LIMA - Calvary United Methodist Church of North Lima will hold its monthly drive-thru chicken dinner from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Jan. 9, or until sold out. The dinner consists of a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a brownie. Cost is $6 per dinner.
