Test drive Windows 8 at Community Center

SALEM - The Salem Community Center is offering a three-day test drive of Windows 8 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20, 23 and 24. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. To register or for additional information call 330-332-5885.

Beaver Local construction meeting set

LISBON - The Beaver Local Board of Education will meet with Hammond Construction at 10 a.m. Monday to host a pre-bid meeting for the school district's building project at the high school, 13187 state Route 7. For additional information contact Hammond Construction or the BOE office.

On Jan. 23, Superintendent Kent Polen will update residents about the current priorities and future goals of the district during the annual state of the schools address at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. This event is open to the public. Upon request to the superintendent, the district shall make reasonable accommodations for a disabled person to be able to participate in this event.

Physicians invited to press conference

CANFIELD - Area physicians are invited to participate in a press conference with Congressman Bill Johnson at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Canfield City Building, council chambers, 104 Lisbon St., following a roundtable discussion of recent cuts to the United Healthcare Medicare Advantage program.

A number of physicians have had their practices directly impacted by the cuts to Medicare Advantage and have been told they can no longer participate in United Healthcare's Advantage Program and would not be reimbursed for seeing patients enrolled in the program. Senior patients have been forced to switch plans or leave their long-term physician.

After following United Healthcare's appeal process, most area physicians received unfavorable determinations. Johnson has been working to reverse these decisions and has been successful with four doctors. He is continuing to work with local physicians who are still affected by these cuts.

Grace Lutheran to open food pantry

EAST PALESTINE - The Grace Lutheran Church's food pantry will be open, to East Palestine School District residents only, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 22.

First responder class offered

DAMASCUS -Canton City Schools is offering an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) first responder class to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 23 through March 11 at Damascus Volunteer Fire/Rescue.

The cost of the EMR course is $370 which includes text books. No prior medical background or training is needed to enroll in this course.

Family board game night set in Sebring

SEBRING - The Sebring High School group "To infinity and beyond" is sponsoring a family board game night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at Sebring High School. Admission is $2 per person. Admission price also includes pizza and a beverage. Popcorn will be available for sale. All proceeds will fund the group's trip to London and Paris.

Valentine's Day card program offered

COLUMBIANA - Registration is still being accepted at the Columbiana Public Library for the Valentine's Day cards program to be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30. Karen Ullom will demonstrate the Accu-Cut machine along with card stock. Sign-up at the library or call 330-482-5509.

Auditions set for 'Fox on the Fairway'

SALEM - Salem Community Theatre has announced audition dates for the comedy, "Fox on the Fairway" by Ken Ludwig, at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3. This high-paced farce features a cast of six actors: two men and two women age 40 or older, and one man and one woman age 20 or older.

The show is about two rival golf clubs vying for bragging rights, the trophy, plus an interesting side bet between the two club presidents, for winning the annual inter-club golf tournament, each trying to win in any way they can. The director is Bill Finley.

Show dates are weekends April 4-13, with rehearsals commencing in mid-February. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the script and interact with other actors. A cursory knowledge of golf and a sense of comedy are helpful, but not necessary.

Winona Historical Society to meet

WINONA - The Winona Area Historical Society plans to meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Winona Evangelical Friends Church. A program, "Leaving a Legacy: Estate Planning Strategies," will be provided by Attorney Doug Toot.

Peddler's Day committee sets plans
