SALEM- James Holwick Pidgeon, 72, of East Rochester, Ohio, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his home following an extended illness. He was born Nov. 23, 1941, in Salem, the son of the late James Arthur Jr. and Betty Jane Pidgeon.
Jim attended Salem High School and was a 1960 graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, Pa. In addition to his academic studies, Jim enjoyed wrestling and playing football at the academy. As a youth, Jim attended the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Salem where he was an altar boy. He also led ponies for the Salem Saddle and Polo Club, organized by his father.
Jim was a life-long beef, dairy and crop farmer as well as co-owner and operator of the Church Budget Monthly Mail Co. in Salem for over 40 years. He enjoyed farming, fishing trips to Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada, and tractor pulls.
Jim is survived by his four children, Kimberly (Joseph) Shipbaugh, Amy (Damon) Deitz, James (Tracie) Pidgeon and Eric Pidgeon; his brothers Barry (Rhonda) Pidgeon and Michael (Brenda) Pidgeon; sister-in-law Dawn (Helmick) Bare; brother-in-law Eldon (Virginia) Helmick; grandchildren, Carrie (Brock) VanMeter, Joseph Shipbaugh, Erin (Nick) Gotschall, Chevy Deitz, Clay Pidgeon, Jazzlyn Pidgeon, Jadyn Pidgeon and Levi Pidgeon; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Wanda Sue (Helmick) Pidgeon, and his dog and faithful companion, Buddy.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home, Salem, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
