LISBON - Beaver Local's Jared Lyder and Wellsville's Seth Bradford decided to showcase all of their game at the 29th annual Columbiana County Classic on Tuesday.
Lyder scored 11 of his 15 points during a pivotal second-half run and looked good at point guard in leading his Red Team to an 89-68 win at Nace Gymnasium.
"I had no idea what to expect coming in," he said. "I wanted to have fun."
Lyder was at his best during a 12-0 stretch in which he had three baskets and two assists, followed by a pair of blocked shots on the way to earning Most Valuable Player honors.
"(East Liverpool's) D.J. Austin was going to handle the ball," Lyder said. "When he was out, I found myself with the ball at the top of the key and I went with it."
Bradford - who wasn't the first option on a Wellsville team that featured the area's top scorer in Nate Scott - scored a game-high 26 points, including six three-pointers, as he was named the Blue Team MVP.
"It is a little different," Bradford said. "I thought I was going to play my usual role of rebounding and feeding the guys from inside. I got on a hot streak and they wanted to get me the ball."
He had four three-pointers in the first half, including three in a row to give his Blue team a 32-23 lead with 6:52 to play in the first half.
"Why even guard him?" Lyder said. "He was 23- and 24-feet away with two guys in his face."
Beaver Local's Chandler Cornell had a pair of three-pointers and Crestview's Dylan Hart followed with another as the Red Team evened the score a 39-39 at halftime.
The score was 45-45 four minutes into the second half before the Red Team started to take over. Lisbon's Matt Spencer hit a three-pointer to give the Red Team the lead for good.
East Liverpool's Austin Emmerling topped the Red Team with 17 points, including 11 in the first half to keep the score close.
Spencer, Cornell, Austin and Hart each added 10 points as the Red Team featured six players in double figures. Heartland's Caleb House contributed eight points, including two three-pointers, during the second-half run.
Wellsville's duo of Bradford and Jordan Sloan and Southern Local's Jared Shilot combined for 51 of the Blue Team's 68 points. Shilot collected 14 and Sloan 11.
Lyder was the only one of five seniors on the Columbiana County first team to play in the Classic.
"I'm playing in the OVAC game and I wanted to play in this game because it's a lot of fun," Lyder said. "It's a lot more laid back and you get a chance to play with your friends."
"I'll play in any game as long as they offer," Bradford said.
Bradford watched Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas play in the Division IV state championship game on TV Saturday.
"I wish that was us instead of them," he said.
St. Thomas defeated Wellsville in a district semifinal showdown on the way to its first state berth since 1975. St. Thomas dropped a 71-44 decision to top-ranked Convoy Crestview.
"I was hoping they would win," Bradford said. "Then we could say we lost to the state champions."
The Blue Team missed nine of its first 10 shots to fall behind 10-3 early on.
Lyder's last game will be the OVAC All-Star game on April 6.
"I've had a good career," he said. "I'm going to focus on school."
Bradford is heading to Muskingum College as a tight end.
"I'm getting ready for college football," he said.
Former Springfield Local standout Luke Summers is an assistant coach at Muskingum.
"That's who wants me to come down there," Bradford said.
