BERLIN CENTER - Several area teams competed Saturday at the Lew Speece Invitational at Western Reserve High School.
Western Reserve had a strong showing in the boys meet, finishing third in a field of 21 teams with 65 points, falling to meet winners Maplewood with 118 and second-place St. Thomas Aquinas with 78.
In the girls meet, Springfield placed fourth with 53 points, beating out Western Reserve in fifth with 39. St. Thomas Aquinas won the girls meet with 121, followed by Independence in second with 97 and Garfield third with 81.
The Western Reserve boys picked up its third place with victories from Joe Falasca in the 300 meter hurdles (43.21) and the 110 hurdles (15.97) while teaming with Josh Vuletich, Marc Harper and Brian Sunderman to win the 400 relay (45.42), and the 800 relay (1:34.93).
Sunderman came in second in the long jump (20-6) and in the 200 dash (24.73), and Anthony Bolton placed sixth in the 400 dash (55.19)
Vuletich, Harper and Bolton joined Joey Stubbs as they placed third in the 1600 relay (3:51.20).
For the girls, Hannah Grace placed second in the long jump (14-9), and teamed with Baylee Harley, Lauren Falasca and Paige Ewing for second in the 400 relay (54.03) and the 800 relay (1:55.83).
Rounding out for Western Reserve was Cheyene Finney as she placed eighth in shot put (31-11)
The Springfield girls had success with Caitlyn Cyrus, Samantha Bertin, Cecilia Bieznieks and Courtney Cyrus as they won the 800 relay (1:54.08). Caitlyn, Courtney and Bieznieks joined Ashlee Butryn for a third place finish in the 400 relay (54.2).
Courtney also placed third in the 300 hurdles (52.15) and the 100 hurdles (17.52), Quinn Crowe second in the shot put (35-7.5), fourth in the discus(103-10), and Hannah Grace placed fifth in the 200 dash (30.19)
Devon Sasher, Catie Leipply, Madison Bender and Valerie Kinsey came in sixth in the 3200 relay (12:08.78)
Placing seventh were Rachel Leach in the long jump (13-9.75), Leipply in the high jump (4-0) and Bertin in the 400 dash (68.03).
Rounding out for Springfield were Jane Casto who was eighth in the high jump (4-0) and Sara Chaszeyka who was eighth in the discus (94-3).
For the boys, Randy Groves finished second in the 400 dash (53.34).
For Columbiana, Shayla Ray placed second in the 100 hurdles (17.31) and fourth in the high jump (4-8) while Hayli Davison placed second in the high jump (4-8).
Dalton Miller placed third in the high jump (5-8) and seventh in the 100 dash (12.32), Mike Buzzard earned fourth in the shot put (46-0.25), Eamon Eavers placed seventh in the 400 dash (55.68), and Madison Stryffler placed eighth in the 300 hurdles (53.7).
Miller and Eavers joined Chris Ramm and Dalton Miller in a sixth-place finish in the 400 relay (48.17)
For Lisbon, Seth Davis placed third in the 300 hurdles (44.62), Jason Thompson went fifth in the 200 dash (25.17) and Jannik Schmidt sixth in the 100 dash (12.22)
Ana Sanor placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (52.54) and seventh in the 100 hurdles (19.61), and Bobbi Jo Evans also placed fourth in the 400 dash (66.17) and sixth in the 200 dash (30.67).
Carmen Phillips placed seventh in the 1600 run (6:15.56), and rounding out for Lisbon in eighth place was Hailey McVay in the 100 dash (14.19) and Holly Graham in the 3200 run (16:11.59)
Lisbon also placed seventh in the girls 400 relay (56.58) and the boys 3200 relay (9:34.42), and eighth in the girls 3200 relay (12:51.56).
Also placing in the tournament was Wellsville's Vinny Giordano who was sixth in the shot put (44-2) and Jordan Allen who wasw eighth in the 400 dash (55.68). Clayton Cunningham was Southern's only scorer, placing fifth in the shot put (44-8) and the discus (126-9).
