Firefighters battle 10-acre brush fire

April 20, 2014
Salem News

Two dozen firefighters from Green Township with assistance from Leetonia, Columbiana and Beaver Township departments knocked down a 10-acre brush fire in two hours Friday afternoon. According to Green Township Assistant Fire Chief Mike Blythe, a small brush fire behind the Ed Esenwein residence at 240 Chris Ave., Washingtonville was left unattended for a short amount of time and ignited an adjacent corn field. Wind gusts and dry conditions fueled the fire that burned a field and part of another as well as the surrounding tree lines. Firefighters urge all residents who must burn at this time of year not to leave any fire unattended and to always have a water source close at hand to douse the fire should it get out of control.
