SALEM - The Fourth Thursday Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Memorial Building. the meal will be sponsored by the Columbiana Presbyterian Church at Friends of the Banquet. The menu offers pizza, salad, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and ice cream sundaes.

National Day of Prayer will be observed in Salem May 1
SALEM - The eighth annual National Day of Prayer gathering begins at noon May 1 on the Village Green at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce on the corner of State Street and Lincoln Avenue.
This year's theme is "One Nation, United in Prayer."
The 50-minute program includes a proclamation for the city of Salem, flag presentations and a pledge, musical selections, but most of all Scriptures and prayers (by clergy and laypersons) for government, military, media, business, education, church, and family.
Guilford Lake Civic Association meeting scheduled today
LISBON- The Guilford Lake Civic Association's meeting starts at 7 p.m. today at the Ruritan Hall on Route 172. Ruth Ann Rinto and Wendy Doyle will present information on the United School levy that will be on the ballot.
Volunteers for the annual boat parade are needed and asked to put up flyers, contact the news media, order trophies and pick them up, contact local businesses for prizes, obtain judges, etc.
Montessori Preschool hosting craft show Saturday at CCCTC
LISBON The Lisbon Montessori Preschool will host a free "Spring Into Education Craft Show" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.
More than 40 vendors will be on hand and a light lunch will be served. The event provides child games, crafts, a basket raffle and children can explore the basics of the Montessori principle at a mini-session education table.
The preschool is a non-profit cooperative that provides a unique pre-kindergarten learning experience for children. An open house is slated from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at 233 E. Washington St. For more information call 330-429-1314.
Western Reserve MC will hold spring kickoff this weekend
SALEM - Western Reserve Motorcycle Club at 14439 W. Middletown Road will hold its spring kickoff for the 2014 season this weekend.

Damascus Elementary School earns national recycling award
DAMASCUS- The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) has chosen West Branch's Damascus Elementary School to receive the 2014 AF&PA Recycling Award. This is the first time that the school has won the national award.
Damascus was chosen for the award by submitting an application, partnering with the Mahoning County Green Team, for its new and innovative program for recycling paper.
The AF&PA judged its program based on the volume of paper collected, the school's creativity in raising awareness for recycling, its participation in the program from the staff and students and its partnership with the community to achieve their goal.
The AF&PA will be presenting the award to Damascus in May.
Damascus will receive a cash award, along with an original piece of framed artwork and they will be recognized on the AF&PA website to help promote the importance of recycling and show other schools new ways to recycle.
Tire collection for Elkrun Twp. residents scheduled May 2
ELKRUN TOWNSHIP - A tire collection for Elkrun Township residents is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 at the township garage lot. There is a 10 tire limit per household. Passenger tires and light truck tires without rims will be accepted.

SALEM - The Salem Lions Club is sponsoring a Wellness Program blood analysis provided by Quest Diagnostics, from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. May 10 at the Salvation Army, 1249 N. Ellsworth Ave.
Appointments may be made by calling 800-234-8888. Cost is $36 for the AMBA Panel. Optional tests range from $12 to $25.70 each.
This screening is not covered by Medicare and most other insurance companies. Check or money orders only will be accepted the day of the program and should be made payable to AMBA Wellness Programs. A separate physician order is required for any of the optional tests.
Golf scramble will benefit American Cancer Society
VIENNA - The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be held July 14 at Squaw Creek-Avalon Golf and Country Club. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle.

Simply Slavic Committee offering academic scholarship
YOUNGSTOWN - The Simply Slavic Committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship.
Undergraduate Youngstown State University students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship.
All applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay on how being Slavic affects their life and substantiate their Slavic lineage.
A panel of made up of the Simply Slavic organizing committee will select the winners after reviewing the essays, overall academic achievement, faculty recommendations, and involvement in their culture.
The deadline for scholarship applicants is May 23. The winners will be announced, from noon to 11 p.m., at the group's fourth annual festival on June 21 at Federal Plaza East. Further information and applications are available by request at email@example.com.
Canfield Community Concert Band hosting concert Sunday
CANFIELD - The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a spring concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Canfield High School on Cardinal Drive.
The concert is a benefit performance for Operation Blessing, a volunteer group of 40 or more members that distributes food items to area families in need. Housed at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, Operation Blessing is supported by several Canfield area churches, high school groups, and local businesses as well as individuals.
There is no admission charge for the concert. To help carry on its mission, support for Operation Blessing is requested in the form of non-perishable food items and monetary donations.
The concert program will feature Give Us This Day - Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble by composer David Maslanka. The program will also include the music of John Williams, Henry Mancini and more. More information about the band can be found at canfieldccband.org.recycle.
