HOMOSASSA, Fla. - Alexander J. Stevens, 88, of Homosassa, Fla., passed away surrounded by his family in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday, June 15, 2014.
He was born in Mt. Union, Pa., on June 17, 1925, the son of George and Anna Serbanuta. He graduated from Salem High School in 1942, earned a bachelor's of science degree in business administration from Kent State University in 1949, then married and raised a family in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and Severna Park, Md., before retiring to Florida.
Alexander proudly served his country in World War II with the U.S. Navy and worked for 29 years for the U.S. Department of Transportation. He was an avid golfer, only giving up the sport weeks before his death.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Olive (nee McGee); six children, Charles (Jeanne) Stevens, Debra Wheeler, David Stevens, Kimberly (Martin) Hamilton, Pamela (Matthew) Bacharach, and Laura (Timothy) Flynn; 10 grandchildren, Megan, Kelly, and the late Eric Stevens, Michelle Albright, Molly Hamilton, Kathryn, Rebecca, and Emma Bacharach, and Tara and Timothy Jr. Flynn; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Caroline and Katy Albright and Jameson Sweeting.
Memorial service and interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Alexander's memory to his church, First United Methodist Church of Homosassa, 8831 W. Bradshaw St., Homosassa, Fla. 34448, or the USO Honor Flight Network (www.usometrodc.org), of which he was a proud recipient of their Ocala, Fla., Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2010.
