Fourth Thursday Banquet served today
SALEM - The Fourth Thursday Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St.
The meal will be sponsored by Friends of the Banquet. The menu offers penne pasta and meatballs, green beans, salad, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and ice cream sundaes.

Radio Relay League field day scheduled
SALEM - The Salem Area Amateur Radio Association's Amateur Radio Relay League's field day begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at 1132 Jennings Ave.
Set-up starts at 10 a.m. followed by a coverdish picnic at 6 p.m.
Southern BOE will meet Monday
SALINEVILLE - The Southern Local Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. Monday in the administrative office. Year-end business and any other business will be addressed.
County Board of Elections will meet
LISBON - The Columbiana County Board of Elections will meet in regular session at 1:30 p.m. July 1 in the board office at 7989 Dickey Drive, Suite 3.
Salem Youth Chorus will perform July 7
SALEM - The Salem Youth Chorus (SYS) will present its annual Cabaret/Dinner/Concert begins at 7 p.m. July 7 in St. Paul's Social Hall, 925 E. State St.
A shish kabob dinner (meat/veggie or just veggie) will be served with salad, bread and dessert. Soda may be purchased, coffee will be provided.
The SYC singers will provide cabaret music of diverse styles during dinner. Following dinner, the SYC presents its concert tour program.
This year, the SYC will be in residence at St. Francis Cathedral in Nassau, Bahamas, where the ensemble will be presenting a concert and providing music at all the cathedral's weekend liturgies. SHC hosting concealed carry class
SALEM - A basic Ohio one-day concealed carry class will be held July 12 at the Salem Hunting Club (salemhuntingclub.com).
The class emphasis the importance of firearm safety and understanding why it's crucial to never lose sight of it, increasing your skills and confidence when handling and shooting your firearm, understanding why using potentially deadly force should always be the absolute last resort and much more.
Free "loaners" are available if needed and the club provides free bottled water, soft drinks and coffee during class. To pre-register call 330-332-9847.
HEAP will begin summer crisis program
SEBRING - Beginning July 1, the Home Energy Assistance Program's (HEAP) Summer Crisis Program begins at the Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership offices in Youngstown and Sebring.
Mahoning County residents are eligible if their household income is at or below 175 percent of the 2014 Federal Poverty Guidelines; they meet the eligibility criteria; and they provide the necessary documentation. The program runs through Aug. 31.
Eligible applicants include individuals with a documented medical condition verifying that they have a medical illness and would benefit from an air conditioner or continued electric service; individuals age 60 and over.
Required documentation includes income for the primary applicant and all household members 18 years of age and older; Social Security numbers for the primary applicant and all household members; proof of medical condition documentation signed by a licensed physician (does not apply to individuals age 60 and over); both primary and electric heating bills; proof of disability, if disabled.
Air conditioners, fans, utility assistance, central air condition repair are available.
All customers who meet the eligibility criteria must schedule an appointment at the MYCAP office in Youngstown by calling the toll free Interactive Voice Response system at 866-223-1125, or the MYCAP Western Mahoning County office at 330-938-6166 Ext. 1500.
Residents should be aware that MYCAP only accepts walk-in appointments for the Summer Crisis Program for those whose service is already disconnected.
All others must schedule an appointment by phone.
Strawberry social planned Saturday
SALEM - The public is invited to a strawberry social from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ruth Smucker House, 271 S. Broadway Ave.
This event is sponsored by the Smucker House Herb Guild.

Winona Strawberry Festival is Sunday
WINONA - Barbecued chicken dinners will be served along with strawberry shortcake, pies and ice cream at the Winona Strawberry Festival on Sunday at the Winona Playground.
The public is invited from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event also features entertainment and the Kiko auction which begins at 2 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Meeting House restoration.
Nature photography workshop offered
SALEM - Rich Stelts of Swan Lake Photography will teach, demonstrate and explain basic techniques required and equipment needed to take nature photos at 6:30 p.m. Monday in pavilion #2 at Centennial Park.
The Salem Public Library and Salem Parks Department is offering this nature photography class as part of this year's "Go Wild at the Parks" programming, free of charge.
Participants will take nature photos at any of the six locations in the Salem Parks system and enter their favorite photo in a contest at 6:30 p.m. July 7 in pavilion #2.
The contest is open to all local amateur photographers. Winning photos will be selected by a panel of judges and published in the Salem News. Prizes will be awarded on July 7.

Red Cross blood drive is Monday
COLUMBIANA - An American Red Cross blood drive is slated from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday in the main banquet hall at Dutch Village Inn, 150 E. State Route 14. All donors receive a free T-shirt and refreshments.
Donors may sign up to win a free overnight dinner theater package for two which includes dinner and show tickets for one of the inn's upcoming productions, a free overnight stay, and a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast.
Registration is not required. Advance appointments are available at redcrossblood.org.
Presentation on herbs planned July 2
SALEM - "The Wonderful World of Herbs," presented by Pat Fuller, begins at 7 p.m. July 2 at the Ruth Smucker House, 271 S. Broadway Ave.
Fuller is a certified Ohio State master gardener volunteer and director of Friends of the Greenhouse Consortium at Packard Park.
She will tell the history, myths and lore of herbs, discuss how to grow and use herbs, and touch on their culinary uses and medicinal history. Fuller planted thousands of herbs this year and sold 25 different types.
She lives and gardens in Warren where she has been given the honorary title city of Warren master gardener. This free program is sponsored by the Smucker House Herb Guild. For more information to join call 330-332-1632.
BEAVER TOWNSHIP - A benefit square dance will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. July 5 at Paradise Church, 10020 New Buffalo Road. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the dance and basket raffle will be directed to the donor of the kidney to Neil Maxwell.
HANOVERTON - The second annual Gavin Ward Memorial Run/Walk 5K night run kicks off at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 8 at United High School. Registration will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost is $20 to all runners registered by July 30. Each runner registered by that time is also guaranteed a dry fit race shirt. Registration is $25 the night of the race. All funds and proceeds benefit the Gavin D. Ward Memorial Scholarship at the high school. Ward, the late son of Mike and Denise Ward of Salem, died of an asthma attack after a football practice before entering the seventh grade. There will be a DJ, fruit, water and awards after the race and a raffle during and after the race. Among the prizes are an overnight stay for two at the Spread Eagle, a Walmart $50 gift card, a $25 gift card from Giant Eagle.
