Col. Kennedy retires

U.S. Marine Corps Col. Brian M. Kennedy of Salem was honored during a retirement ceremony at the Masonic Lodge on Monday. The Poland, Ohio native and 1984 Poland Seminary High School graduate is pictured with his wife, Heather. The couple moved to Salem recently and Kennedy, who holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering will be retired effective Oct. 1. Kennedy completed more than 3,500 hours in the AH-1A Super Cobra helicopter and has flown more than 200 combat missions in 24 years of active service. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with "V" and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and completed 72 combat missions during the invasion of Iraq. He returned there in 2005 and flew an additional 150 combat missions. The ceremony was presided over by Kennedy's commanding officer, Brigadier Gen. Thomas D. Weidley.
