LEETONIA- Village Council is replacing the old playground equipment at Wick Park with a new structure soon.
Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of the jungle gym/pirate ship wooden structure from from Wayside Lawn Structures for $20,346.50. The cost includes site preparation, delivery, set up, rubber mulching and bumpers in addition to the structure.
Council members said that the purchase is a $6,000 to $7,000 discount considering the structure alone costs upwards of $22,000.
The structure includes a variety of playground equipment such as miscellaneous swings, slides, climbing nets, picnic tables, a see-saw and a swinging bridge.
The current wooden structure has had sections removed due to safety hazards. The remaining sections, including swings, will be moved to either the coke ovens or the baseball field.
Funding for the new structure will come from income tax collection.
"People don't see a lot of things council does. This is something that can be there in the park for every kid to play on," Councilwoman Sue Buchanan said regarding the purchase being a positive for the village. "The village is worth giving this back to them."
