Backbeat to perform in Salem park
SALEM - The Salem Summer Concert Series will host the group Backbeat at 6 p.m. Sunday at Waterworth Memorial Park. Backbeat has performed together for over 20 years. Their music ranges from the big band era through modern pop music, with emphasis on Motown, disco, pop, oldies, swing, jazz, and other dance music. Attendees are reminded to bring a lawn chair.
County Records Commission to meet
LISBON - The Columbiana County Records Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the auditor's conference room on the main floor of the courthouse. The purpose of the meeting is to approve any records retention schedules or records disposal requests presented to the Records Commission Board.
Lisbon food pantry open Thursday
LISBON - The Lisbon Baptist Food Pantry at 6428 Lisbon Road will be open from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Those attending are asked to bring identification.
First Presbyterian Preschool has openings
SALEM - First Presbyterian Preschool has openings for the upcoming school year. Classes are offered two days per week for children who turn 3 by Sept. 30. 'Life after High School' programs set
SALEM - Salem Public Library is offering three "Life after High School" programs in room 23 at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St., designed for high school juniors, seniors and interested graduates. These programs will help students prepare for brighter futures by explaining some of the options in education and training.
Programs include "Hey Look at Me!" at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2, featuring a panel of admissions personnel from area colleges and universities who will discuss what gets a college application noticed.
A panel of presenters from two-year degree institutions and trade schools will discuss their programs at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9.
The third program at 6:30 p.m. Sept.16 features information on options for certifications, licenses and apprenticeships. All programs are open to the public and free of cost. For more information call 330-332-0042.
Online Warrior Academy offered
BELOIT - Starting in the 2014/15 school year, the West Branch Local School District will offer an online learning program called Warrior Academy. This is a tuition-free program for grades six 12.
Warrior Academy will offer students a new avenue to receive a high quality education with the expectation that all students will succeed.
By enrolling in the Warrior Academy program, each student has the opportunity to: receive a West Branch High School diploma upon graduation; participate in all West Branch Local Schools' extracurricular activities, including athletics, clubs, band, choir, theater, etc.; receive individual attention and tutoring (in person when necessary) on a daily or weekly basis provided by highly qualified teachers; attend school in a supervised, private computer lab setting on the West Branch campus or complete his/her online assignments at home; receive personalized tutoring for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).
Warrior Academy offers an online curriculum which is aligned with the new state standards. Warrior Academy will provide a rigorous curriculum consisting of regular and advanced courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, as well as a number of elective courses, and credit recovery.

Salem Theatre plans 'Forum' auditions
SALEM - Salem Community Theatre at 490 E. State St. has scheduled audition dates for the classic musical comedy, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" by Stephen Sondheim, the theater's first musical of its 2014-15 season.
Auditions begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 and 25. Adam Day Howard of Kent will serve as director and musical director.
The cast contains mostly men (11 or more) of various ages and three to four women. Those auditioning should come with a song prepared (accompanist will be provided) and ready to read from the script and interact with other actors.
Show dates are Oct. 24 though Nov. 9, seven performances over three weekends with one matinee on Nov. 9. For more information contact the theater at 330-332-9688 or salemcommunitytheatre.org.
West Branch orientation programs set
BELOIT - Orientation for all fifth-grade students begins at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 in the auditorium at West Branch High School and moves to the middle school for a building tour. Students may meet their teachers and receive their schedules and bus information until 6 p.m. Any schedules not picked up on Monday will be mailed Aug. 27.
Open house for all sixth-grade students will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at West Branch Middle School. Students will receive their schedules and meet their teachers. Students unable to attend the open house may pick up their schedule at the middle school from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 25. Any schedules not picked up on Monday will be mailed Aug. 27.
