Far too many are dying to ignore it but the Obama administration has our foreign relations so messed up that it's now not clear what we can do.

In Syria, the most effective fighting force against the Bashar al Assad regime is al Qaeda & Co. The main group, Jabhat al-Nusra, has conducted suicide attacks and seeks an Islamist state under sharia law. (The feds have also charged a former American GI for fighting alongside al Nusrah.)

The Syrian group works closely with al Qaeda in Iraq, which once again numbers in the thousands. It has rebounded from the departure of US forces in 2011 and is the source of ghastly violence across the country.

The Iraqi and Syrian al Qaeda allies have reportedly proclaimed the creation of an Islamist state called “al Sham.” The Associated Press reports that they’ve set up camps along the Syria-Iraq border.

There was a time when we could have just assisted the locals who were being killed...now it's a mess.

On an official level the US should stay uninvolved but should identify a group that can bring a form of democracy to Syria and surreptitiously support them.

Obama's last success...

TRIPOLI | Wed May 1, 2013 1:24pm EDT

(Reuters) - Armed protests targeting Libya's ministries and media in the capital this week have alarmed international observers who say deteriorating security conditions are becoming a matter of serious concern.

Reporters without Borders said there was cause for "grave concern about recent violent attacks on Libyan journalists, whose safety conditions are deteriorating drastically" and called on the government to act.

Gunmen in heavily armed vehicles remained in control of Libya's Foreign Ministry for a fourth day on Wednesday, while the Justice Ministry was similarly surrounded on Tuesday and other institutions including the media have been targeted.

If taking out the dictator means supporting Al Qaeda, then I guess we have to stay out of it. The media likes to show nice people who will talk to them and explain their plight, but I wonder if for every 1 of them there are 50 that hate America. Basically, I wouldn't want to help any country that generally thinks we're just a bunch of evil, devil dog infidels.

Well, if you had been watching the news lately...he does. And one of the defectors told investigators that Iraq's WMD were shipped to Syria just prior to our bombing but the news will not report that. Guess it would be too much to just tell the truth for a change and besides that, then Bush could not be blamed for everything.

As the White House mulls whether Syria has crossed Obama’s red line and used chemical weapons, the U.S. military and intelligence community are quietly acknowledging that the United States does not know where many of those weapons are located. The judgment comes from top U.S. military commanders and is supported by recent intelligence community assessments, according to U.S. officials who work closely on Syrian intelligence matters. At the heart of the concern is that the Syrian military has transferred more and more of its, and Iraq's stock of sarin and mustard gas from storage sites to trucks where they are being moved around the country. While U.S. intelligence agencies first saw reports that Syria was moving the weapons last year, the process has accelerated since December, according to these officials. ... Also worrisome, said two of the officials, is intelligence from late last year that says the Syrian Scientific Research Center—an entity responsible for Syria’s chemical-weapons stockpile—has begun to train irregular militias loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in how to use the chemical munitions.

The assessment that Syria is moving large amounts of its chemical weapons around the country on trucks means that if Obama wanted to send in U.S. soldiers to secure Syria’s stockpiles, his top generals and intelligence analysts doubt such a mission would have much success, according to the three officials
