Did they ever learn how to play music?

I wasn't a big fan of Elvis, but he (and the early, black rhythm and blues artists who are just now getting credit) influenced the Beatles and many others that came after. The so called "British invasion" artists were heavily influenced by American blues music, including the Beatles. In fact, some of their early hits were not written by them, but were American blues songs.

At least you could understand the literature or words of the music.

Yes, but not so much when they got into their psychedelic phase...that stuff got pretty bizarre.
