Studies show that many minimum wage workers get government aid such as food stamps and Medicaid. Would increasing it — as Obama is doing with fed workers — get people off the dole?

Will it ever end...seems like we have had 480+ comments about the minimum wage over the last week.

But, it will take a complete change and jobs to correct the mess we now have. If they increase the minimum wage, it will most likely not remove the numbers getting other aid.

I Still it goes back to common sense .

The more disposable income a person has the more he will spend on goods.

Which in turn creates demand and more jobs,

Yes increased spending can cause inflation and that's where the Fed controls rates to keep it under control.

I can't understand why some want to beat down the bottom 95 % of our society.

Response. It's going to be hard selling cars to those machines !! Ha HA

No, the idea that it does has been proven false time and time again. Minimum wage has been raised a bunch of times, yet the number of people on the public dole continues to climb. The only way you can't see that is to completely ignore history--or expect results to be different from the same policy, which is the definition of insanity.

YOU'RE the one beating down on the 95% you mention ladybug. IT DOESN'T WORK, get it through your head. Learn something before you spew your ignorance onto everyone.

Go away Grant, Like I said you can go to different links and get different opinions. Minimum wage has not been raised a bunch of times. The last in 2009.

Everyone deserves to have there wages raised a little to cover inflation.

That $7.25 /hr in todays wage is probably equal to $6 /hr now.

If you read something beside the I whata be Great by Grant .

The bottom 95 % has seen their buying power taking inflation by $5000/year.over the last decade .

In fact, bug...what we the people are given is the opportunity and freedom to be successful or not and a government that protects from foreign and domestic harm.

What we do a our State level, city or town level and personally is to help those who for no fault of their own need help.

What's wrong with that?

I believe we need to return to the old days where there was opportunity for everyone. What you chose was your responsibility .

I believe in helping those who truly need help.

Unfortunately we have created a monster. Too many looking for a free ride and it's going to break us.

The inflation that is caused by terrible Fed policy. Minimum wage was raised in '09, so have there been more or fewer people on the dole since it was raised? Something like 4% of the country works at the minimum wage. FOUR PERCENT. You aren't supposed to be able to make a living wage on minimum wage. It's for people who have 3 roommates, college/high school students, retirees looking for extra income. Not for the single mother of 3. Why stop at $10 ladybug? Why not just raise it to $100? Your theory can't answer that question. It creates higher unemployment for minorities and young people...you know why? Because it's ILLEGAL for someone to hire a kid to sweep the floors for $5 an hour. What authority does the government have to tell that kid that he can't work for that and develop a skill/work ethic?

You know nothing about economics. Go play in the snow or something.

In fact, you're only entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This kind of policy takes away the liberty and the pursuit from that hypothetical kid.

"I believe we need to return to the old days where there was opportunity for everyone. "

I agree, but RAISING THE MINIMUM WAGE DESTROYS THOSE OPPORTUNITIES!! You contradict yourself completely every time we have a debate like this. You don't even really know where you stand, you just stand where you're told by the people you bow to.

I'm not so far removed from college. I know two kinds of people, the few that got degrees and stayed here and struggled to get a decent job. Some did, some didn't. And ones that moved to where the opportunities were. The RESPONSIBILITY for the pursuit is on the individual, period.

Well maybe you better look around Bullwinkle. The unemployeement rate for kids is around 22 % which means a lot of these jobs are being filled by adults who can't find anything else.

There people out there with degree that can't find a decent job.

The Salem News put this up because it creates traffic, like the minimum wage debate that has raged on for a week now and is probably the most commented article I've ever seen.

I suggest to my fellow intelligent people that we just stop here with this one, arguing with ignorance the level of ladybug and TripleD accomplishes EXACTLY nothing.

In the words of Dave Nestic, peace out.

Maybe that's why Salem population is down 3000 or Youngstown is 1/3 the size it used to be

The bottom line is; unions and our government have created the void of middle class jobs period. They have tried to dictate a change in principles of simple economics and capitalism. Hasn't worked out so well.

Remember, those who can't do; teach and those who can't teach; govern. Maybe that explains our lack of leadership!
