And I didn't think it was a lame question because I liked seeing the poll numbers. I wasn't expecting more than half to say they did recognize or observe it. For me, that was a pleasant surprise. Maybe Grant wasn't expecting to see that either.

The Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the country, when in 1775 the Continental Congress called for prayer for the forming of a new nation. Throughout US history, presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln, have called for Americans to pray for their nation, its people, and its elected leaders. In 1952, an act of Congress designated a National Day of Prayer to be observed annually, which was later set as the first Thursday in May.

The constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer was unsuccessfully challenged in court by the Freedom From Religion Foundation after their first attempt was unanimously dismissed by a federal appellate court in April 2011.

What a lame way for the Salem News to try to spark debate. Truth be told, WHO CARES. If you're an atheist, who cares. If you're the most Godly person in the world and you pray before every motion, WHO CARES. Keep it to yourself. If you're broadcasting your PERSONAL faith, or lack there of, you're doing it wrong.
