You'd have to assume council decided it's easier to not argue with him and just let him dig his own grave. I liken it to the scene in Animal House when Bluto says the Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor... "forget it, he's rolling"

"I still am baffled Council went along with this. I obviously wasn't there, and I assume they can't comment, but does anyone know why they all agreed? Were there any questions/comments?"

Do not know? The silence is golden at this point.

I did hear that a certain city council member is doing cartwheels over the fact we are not allowed to comment on the news stories anymore. So it means that well over 75% of those that can't afford a newspaper subscription here in Salem will not learn about any happenings in Salem and council and only by word of mouth.

I think this decision by the Salem news owners is going to back fire and work against them. Because now, the truth printed in the news that every body had access to is going to be manipulated unless somebody actually is willing to post the news content here or someplace else. Council meetings are after the fact discussions. It is going to hurt this city because of it.

"He claims it's what his ward wants, but it seems clear that he has a group of vocal/whiny friends he must have coffee with every morning that drive him to push the dumb stuff he does... there's no way his ward agrees (let alone cares) with most of his "initiatives"

That is the truth. I heard through a grapevine that it might be in Mr. Brown's best interest to get an attorney. Folks I know from his ward, quite a few of them, didn't even know about this, some didn't agree and some allegedly have already made their intentions known that they would be willing to testify against Mr. Brown and witch hunt on this issue.

Can't wait to see how this all unfolds, especially after City council put their noses into as they did.

Wow, they let us read a huge amount of the Roses part tho, don't they? In the letters to the editor, all we get is the paper's headline. Odd.

As for the Sunday R&T section, the Salem News would not be in remiss if they cut the police reports from their papers, as the vast majority did this years ago. While it's amusing to see the crap that people called in to tie up police resources, out of the 4 cities I have lived in Salem is still the only one to regularly publish call logs, the rest just write stories about the rare occasional interesting one.

But, readers want to see the one police report out of 100 that features an actual youth doing something wrong (among the 80 other calls for "youth suspicion" that turn up nothing because the caller is a complete idiot), then the editorial board deliberately frames it in a "beligerent youth culture" editorial to rile up the one foot in the grave reader base that supports the paper.

When people reelected Mr. Brown, they had to have known what they were in for. He has always chased these little "pet projects" that are a humongous waste of time and resources. He claims it's what his ward wants, but it seems clear that he has a group of vocal/whiny friends he must have coffee with every morning that drive him to push the dumb stuff he does... there's no way his ward agrees (let alone cares) with most of his "initiatives"

I don't think there was one, bug. I think it was just one councilman who really had a boehner for them.

I think they should find an old forging press and bang a block of steel into foil all night. People would be begging for the old biz back.

"SALEM - Downtown Metals & Recycling owner Bob Courtney said he wants customers to know he's still open for business and ready to take their scrap."

Good for you, buddy!

Comments closed on articles, and they want us to pay for not being able to comment on stories?

Makes sense, right? Yup.
