Salem’s Foster helps Red team to victory
LISBON – Riding a barrage of three-pointers from East Liverpool’s Mary Davis, the Red team grabbed a 59-50 over their Blue counterparts in the Columbiana County Classic on Thursday at Lisbon High School.
Davis, who garnered Red team MVP honors, scored a game-high 12 points in the contest, all of them coming from three-pointers. Davis’ first two shots were both successful from beyond the arc, prompting her to test her hot hand a lot more from behind the three line.
“I wasn’t really expecting it,” Davis said. “It wasn’t something I was planning on doing.”
Davis would cool off as the game went on, however, making just one three-pointer after halftime. Instead, Red relied on the inside presence and field-goal shooting of Salem’s Lindsey Foster, who scored all of her eight points in the second half. Candace Holmes, Davis’ teammate at East Liverpool, also contributed all of her six points in the final frame.
“We never got together and planned anything out,” Davis said. “We all just came and played how we wanted to play. It’s always fun to get together with the people you’ve played against all year and see how it turns out.”
Blue trailed just 25-23 at halftime, and despite making four three-pointers of their own in the second half, were never able to stop Red’s accurate shooting. United’s Courtney Hydrick, voted Blue’s MVP, had eight points, while Leetonia’s Nicole Mann also added eight.
Key contributors to Red’s victory were Southern’s Kati Hipsley, who scored nine points, as well as Salem’s Ciera Trybend, who had eight. United’s Sam Mathias held the coaching duties for Red. Blue received seven points a piece from United’s Samantha Spitler and Wellsville’s Monica Wilson. Southern’s Corey Leek was the coach for the Blue squad.
