Turkey hunting seminar, calling contest March 23

ALLIANCE – The 18th annual Turkey Hunting Seminar/Amateur Calling Contest will be held at 2 p.m. March 23 at Alliance High School.

The guest speaker will be Dave Freeman, an avid turkey hunter, outdoor writer and radio broadcaster.

There will be an amateur calling contest with divisions for men, women and youth.

Admission is free.

Malvern football coach resigns after 14 seasons

MALVERN – Dave Tucci resigned as head football coach after leading Malvern High School to the state playoffs the last six seasons.

Tucci went 107-49 in 14 seasons at Malvern, including eight playoff appearances and four Inter-Valley Conference championships.

Some of his highlights included Malvern’s first home playoff game in 2004 against Leetonia and a 53-24 win over Shadyside at East Liverpool’s Patterson Field on the way to the 2008 Division VI state semifinals.

Youngstown State women beat Cleveland State

YOUNGSTOWN – Brandi Brown netted 31points to lead the Youngstown State women’s basketball team to a 69-62 win over Cleveland State on Wednesday night to advance to the semi-finals of the Horizon league Tournament.

Brown also pulled down 13 rebounds to secure her 21st double-double of the season.

YSU will play at 6:30 on Thursday night at Green Bay against third-seeded Loyola.

St. Thomas Aquinas fall to Beachwood in regionals

CANTON – Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas’ late-season run ended Wednesday night.

The Knights, who averaged 70.8 points a game in four wins at the Salem sectional-district touranment, were held to 15 points in the first half in a 54-50 loss to eighth-ranked Beachwood in a Division III regional semifinal at the Canton Fieldhouse. St. Thomas ends the season with a 16-11 record.
