Kopachy will lead Newark

NEWARK – Mike Kopachy turned around the football programs at Western Reserve and Salem. Now he is trying to do it at Newark.

Kopachy was chosen from about 80 applicants Tuesday night to be the new head coach at Newark High School, a Division I program in Licking County.

The Wildcats went 1-9 last season and have won six of their 66 games.

Kopachy, a high school English teacher, will make $55,872 for teaching and $9,736 for coaching, according to the Newark Advocate.

He went 22-11 in three seasons at Salem with playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010 and and 30-32 in six seasons at Western Reserve with playoff berths in 2006 and 2008.

Kopachy was named the Ohio Division III Coach of the Year after Salem’s 2009 turnaround season. He took over a Salem program that was coming off an 0-10 season and three wins in three years. The Quakers went 9-3 in 2009 for their winningest season since 1960 and claimed their first playoff berth and victory.

He was defensive coordinator at Canfield in 2012 and offensive coordinator at Boardman in 2013.
