Wolfgang boosts White over Red

BOARDMAN-Three-point shooting has never been the main priority for Salem’s Max Wolfgang. However, in the second half of Wednesday’s Al Beach Classic, with players jacking up shots from all over the gym, he decided to get in on the fun.

Wolfgang hit two three-pointers during a critical second half strtch to help lead the White team to an 88-71 victory over the Red team at Boardman High School.

“Sometimes I’ve been known to step back and hit a couple of threes,” Wolfgang said. “I was feeling good and was able to connect.”

Wolfgang totaled nine points in his final high school game. His two threes came on back-to-back possessions and helped push a 57-51 White lead to 63-53 with 8:29 left.

“It was fun to come out and play with a bunch of other talented players and not have to worry about the score or have any pressure,” Wolfgang said. “Nobody was afraid to shoot tonight.”

Poland’s Jacob Wolfe won the game MVP award, scoring 14 points. Brandon Bates (Badger) led the Red team with 15 points.

Game notes

Labrae’s Peyton Aldridge won the halftime dunk contest, beating out Liberty’s Asim Pleas in the finals. Southern’s Jared Shilot and Crestview’s Eric Lloyd were the two local participants. Neither made the finals.

“As the shortest (6’1) competitor I didn’t know what to expect,” Shilot said. “But I had fun. It felt good to be able to connect on a couple dunks.”

Jake Jones from Lordstown won the three-point shooting contest with 14 buckets. Salem’s D.J. Pullie was fourth with eight.
