Gilbert gives Classic performance
DAYTON – Crestview High School senior Colin Gilbert threw a game-tying 61-yard touchdown pass to Huron’s Cody Thompson with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the South edged out a 28-27 overtime win to take the Div. IV-VII North-South Classic on Saturday at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.
Gilbert, who will attend the University of Mount Union in the fall, went 2 of 2 for 59 yards passing and had six carries for 42 yards along with an interception on defense for the North. For his efforts he was named the North’s offensive MVP.
Western Reserve head coach Andy Hake decided to go for two after the North’s overtime touchdown, but Kirtland’s Sam Kukura was stuffed on the try and the South came away with the narrow victory.
Kenton receiver Justin Sawmiller was awarded Most Outstanding Player honors, grabbing five catches for 112 yard for the North.
The North’s defensive MVP was Hillsdale’s Ryan Bee. For the South, Clinton-Massie’s Kelson Gauden won defensive MVP, while teammate Bayle Wolfe took home offensive MVP honors.
Also playing in the game from the area were Crestview’s Josh McDade, Columbiana’s Mike Buzzard, South Range’s Garrett Sorely, Western Reserve’s Nick Allison and Dan Zilke.
The North won the Div. I-III game 23-14 thanks to a 62-yard touchdown pass from Midview’s Cody Callaway to Akron-St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Parris Campbell.
