Vote unanimous for new ITCL alignment

Inter-Tri County League superintendents voted on Monday to realign the conference into three tiers beginning with the 2015-2016 school year.

The vote was 16-0 according to ITCL assistant commissioner John Mang. The vote of conference principals in March was also unanimous. No changes were made to the proposal that was laid out last month.

“Everybody seems to be on board with giving this thing a chance,” Mang said. “There wasn’t really any dissention.”

The Inter-Tri County league formed eight years ago with the merger of the Tri-County League and Inter-County League. Until now, the 16 schools were broken up into two tiers based on enrollment. The new three tier format will be based primarily on geography.

The Red Tier will feature Crestview, South Range, Springfield, East Palestine and United. The White Tier will have Lisbon, Southern, Columbiana, Wellsville and Leetonia. The Blue Tier will be comprised of Western Reserve, Jackson-Milton, Mineral Ridge, McDonald and Lowellville.

“It will really help these schools out with travel,” Mang said. “It will also be nice to be able to crown three conference champions.”

Mang believes change in some form was going to be inevitable and that it was best for the league to take the initiative and realign.

“I always believe in being proactive,” Mang said. “There were some who weren’t happy with the current situation and by acting we are hoping to preserve the league’s future.”
