BASEBALL: West Branch clinches share of NBC title

BELOIT-The West Branch baseball team clinched a share of the Northeastern Buckeye Conference title with a 5-0 win over Louisville Saturday.

The Warriors last conference title came in 1997. West Branch can clinch the title outright with a win over Louisville on Thursday.

West Branch (14-10, 11-2 NBC) resumes tournament play on Tuesday when the third-seeded Warriors take on second-seeded Poland in a Div. II district semifinal at 4 p.m. at Cene Park.

Jake Smith led the Warriors on Saturday with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Also for West Branch, Kip DeShields pitched a complete game and had a douvle, while Kyle Ziegler was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Louisville drops to 8-14 overall and 7-6 in the NBC.

Minerva 6, Cambridge 3

STEUBENVILLE-The Minerva baseball team earned a Div. II sectional title Saturday, beating sixth-seeded Cambridge 6-3 at Vaccaro Field.

The third-seeded Lions (12-11) will play second-seeded Dover at 5 p.m. Thursday for the Warsaw District two title at River View High School.

Dalton Hartshorn led Minerva with two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

STRUTHERS-The top-seeded Western Reserve baseball team whitewashed ninth-seeded Sebring 14-0 in five innings in a Div. IV sectional final Saturday at Cene Park.

The Blue Devils will face the winner of Moday’s game between seven-seed Lowellville and fifth-seed Mineral Ridge in a Div. IV district semifinal at 4 p.m. Thursday at Cene Park.

Tristan Bova struck out 13 on the mound to lead the Blue Devils. Also contributing were Walker Marlowe with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored, Zach Smith with two hits and two RBIs and Dan Rosati with a hit and two RBIs.
