SOFTBALL: Quakers crush Niles

SALEM-The ninth-seeded Salem softball team pummeled eighth-seeded Niles 17-1 in a Div. II sectional opener Friday.

For the Quakers (7-19) Kari Seddon had a double, a single and five RBIs, Haley Carner had three single, a double and an RBI, while Clara Janofa and Rylee Leider each had a double and two RBIs.

Due to unplayable field conditions at Niles, Salem hosted the game, with the Red Dragons still the home team.

Salem plays at second-seeded Poland at 1 p.m. today. The Quakers conclude their regular season schedule Monday when they host Canton South.

CANTON-Canton South beat West Branch 5-2 in regular season softball action on Friday.

Bailey McElwain was 3 for 3 with a double and a triple for the Warriors (15-6, 8-4 NBC.

The fourth-seeded Warriors host sixth seeded Marlington at 11 a.m. today in a Div. II sectional final.

CARROLLTON-Rachel Eberling and Shelby Amatangelo pitched a combined no-hitter as second-seeded Minerva blanked third-seeded East Liverpool 6-0 in a Div. II sectional final Friday.

The Lions take on top-seeded Dover today in a district semifinal.

Eberling struck out nine in four innings of work, while Amatangelo fanned five in three innings on the mound. Emily Hume paced the Lion offense with two hits and two steals.

West Branch JVs

BELOIT-The West Branch jayvee softball team beat Canton South 3-0 on Friday. Lauren Stitle had a double, a single and two RBIs for the Warriors, while Kaylee Manning singled and stuck out eight.
