Warriors come close

ALLIANCE – West Branch took a one-run lead on area softball power Poland in the top of the fourth, but but saw the Bulldogs come back to score a 6-4 win in a Div. II district semifinal contest on Thursday at Alliance High School.

Bailey McElwain, a second-team Div. II All-Ohioan, smacked a a home run with a single and two RBIs to lead the Warriors, 17-7. Kaylie Lewis added two hits and an RBI. Allie Garrett had two hits and an RBI.

Poland (20-8) got two hits each from Ally Deemer and Claire Testa.

The Bulldogs face rival Canfield today for the district title at Alliance High School.

West Branch is at Minerva on Saturday for a regular season game.

Louisville 7, West Branch 4

LOUISVILLE – West Branch’s quest for the outright Northeastern Buckeye Conference title came up short with a 7-4 loss to Louisville on Thursday.

West Branch ends its season 14-12, 11-3. The Warriors tied with Canton South and Marlington for the league championship. It is West Branch’s first NBC championship since 1997.

Jake Evanoff had a double to lead the Warriors. Chipper Tuel had a single and two RBIs. Jake Smith had a single and RBI.

SALEM – Jordan McGuire pitched a one-hitter and struck out five in his final game for Salem Thursday as the Quakers closed the season with a 5-0 victory over Carrollton.

Branson Wilms also had two singles for the Quakers.
