Season down to just one more week

COLUMBUS — South Range and Springfield Local’s football teams are both on their way to the playoffs and they were highlighted in the weekly Associated Press state football poll released on Monday.

The Raiders (8-1) moved up one place to the ninth spot in Div. V. South Range will finish its regular season slate at East Palestine (6-3) on Friday. A win would secure the Raiders the top seed in Div. V, Region 17. South Range is the highest ranked team from Region 17 in the Associated Press poll.

Springfield Local (7-2) has clinched at least a share of the Inter-Tri County League Red Division and can wrap it up with a win at struggling United (2-7) on Friday. The Tigers sit 11th in this week’s state Div. VI poll, up from 12th last week. The Tigers have clinched a home playoff game and sit second in Div. VI, Region 21. Despite such a high placing within Region 21, Springfield is ranked behind Region 21 members Cuyahoga Heights, Kirkland and St. Thomas Aquinas in the Associated Press state poll.

In Div. VII, Toronto has yet to clinch a playoff spot, but the Red Knights (7-2) are 12th in the state poll. The Red Knights can book their spot in the playoffs with a win over Weirton Madonna on Friday. After suffering its first loss of the season to Cleveland Villa-Angela St. Joseph, Warren JFK (8-1) slipped three spots in the Div. VII poll to sixth.

In Div. IV, traditional powers Steubenville (5th at 8-1) and Cardinal Mooney (8th at 6-2) dotted the landscape with Struthers garnering a first-place vote in the 14th position.

Northeastern Buckeye Conference’s Marlington (9-0) was that league’s only representative in the poll with a sixth place showing in Div. III. See 2B for the poll.
