Cheresne breaks game scoring mark

SALEM — Salem senior Chloe Cheresne etched her name in the Quaker record books with a school record 38 points as Salem downed Alliance 86-18 on Wednesday at Cabas Gymnasium.

Cheresne’s 38 topped the previous record of 37 set by Deb Janofa in 1983.

Cheresne also had 10 rebounds, five blocks and three assists for the Quakers, 9-9, 5-7 in the NBC. Allee Davidson-Chuck added 14 points, six boards and three blocks.

Salem outrebounded Alliance 46-24, including 21 offensive rebounds.

Salem’s jayvees also had a good day with a 45-2 win. Taylor Troy topped the Quaker reserves with 11 points. Salem’s jayvees are 17-1 and 11-1.

Salem is at Marlington on Saturday.

BELOIT — West Branch limited Marlington to 12 points in the second half to pick up a 69-46 win on Wednesday in Northeastern Buckeye Conference play.

Natalie Zuchowski led the offensive charge with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Kayla Hovorka added 18 points and eight rebounds.

West Branch is 17-2 and 11-1. The Warriors took the lead in the NBC thanks to Minerva’s 46-43 win over Louisville on Wednesday. Louisville and West Branch were tied coming into play on Wednesday.  Marlington fell to 13-6 and 8-4.

West Branch won the jayvee game, 42-18.

Louisville 43

LOUISVILLE — Minerva helped West Branch on Wednesday.

The Lions knocked off Louisville, 46-43, to give West Branch sole possession of the Northeastern Buckeye Conference lead.

Louisville drops to 12-7 overall and 10-2 in the NBC, one game behind West Branch with two league games to play.

Minerva improves to 11-8 and 7-5 NBC.

The Lions opened up a seven-point lead in the first quarter and made it hold up. The Lions went ahead 26-13 at halftime and 32-29 after three quarters.

Minerva widened the lead to 39-31 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining. The Leopards clawed back and a Danielle Walter three-pointer closed the gap to 44-43 with 7.9 seconds left.

Minerva will host Carrollton on Saturday.
