Leetonia comeback falls short vs. JFK

LEETONIA–The tournament run for second-seeded Leetonia came to an abrupt end with a 46-45 loss to eighth-seeded Warren JFK in a Division IV sectional opener Wednesday.

The Eagles held a commanding 45-29 lead going to the fourth quarter before Leetonia came storming back. The Bears outscored the Eagles 16-1 in the final frame but it wasn’t quite enough.

The Bears finish their season 15-8. The Eagles travel to fourth-seeded Western Reserve in a sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Tori Norman led the Bears with 14 points. Kristy Eckman notched 12 points and 13 rebounds. Antonella Lamonica led JFK with 19 points. Lamonica nailed four three-pointers. Caitlyn Consoleon swished three three-pointers on her way to 17 points.

Leetonia won the rebounding battle 38-22, but the Eagles hit nine three-pointers to the Bears one.

GREENFORD — Six-seeded South Range got 17 points from Taylor Naples as it opened the Div. III sectional tournament with a 61-30 win over East Palestine on Wednesday.

The Raiders (12-11) will travel to Lisbon for a 1 p.m. Saturday sectional final. The Blue Devils, the third seed, outsted the Raiders 64-62 in a November regular season game.

Aiding the Raiders was Maddie Durkin with 12 points and Sam Patrone with 11 points.

East Palestine got eight points from Sadie Walker.

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana’s Kayla Muslovski had 36 points as the Clippers made short work of Youngstown Liberty, 87-34, on Wednesday in a Div. III sectional opener.

The top-seeded Clippers are 23-0 and will host Campbell Memorial at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional final.

Alexis Cross added 17 points for the Clippers.

SALINEVILLE — Southern Local picked up a Div. IV sectional opener win by a 54-36 count against Wellsville on Wednesday.

Southern (8-15) will travel to top-seed Jackson-Milton at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the sectional final. The Indians lost to Jackson-Milton in the third game of the regular season.

Wellsville ends the season at 1-22.

Anna Sevek sparked the winners with 24 points, while Riley Felton had 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Stella Karcher added eight rebounds.

Menina Jackson paced the Tigers with 15 points and six rebounds. Sara Dalrymple added 12 points and nine rebounds.

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Emily Ferris had 23 points to guide Crestview to a 67-40 win over Springfield on Wednesday in a Div. III sectional opener.

Ferris’ total included six three-pointers. Alexis Gates backed her up with 17 points. Sydni Bowker added 13 points, eight assists and three steals. Tanner Hoffer had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Crestview (12-11) advances to meet second-seed Ursuline at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Ursuline High School.
