Salem upsets Bulldogs

CORTLAND–The Salem girls basketball team kept its late-season momentum going with a 55-50 win over sixth-seeded Lakeview in a Division II sectional opener Saturday.

The eighth-seeded Quakers improve to 12-11 overall and will travel to second-seeded Howland at 7 p.m. Thursday. Howland is ranked 11th in the state poll.

Salem surged to an 11-point halftime lead. Lakeview closed the gap to one after the third quarter, but the Quakers were able to take care of business down the stretch for the victory.

Senior forward Helene Shontz recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead a balanced attack for Salem.

Freshman Echo Mayer-Kutz came away with a couple of big steals and layups near the end of the second quarter on her way to 13 points and seven rebounds.

Also contributing offensively for the Quakers were sophomore Ellie Davidson with 10 points and seven rebounds and junior Allee Davidson-Chuck with nine points and five rebounds.

Freshman Hayden Carner was a big factor defensively with five steals, while fellow freshman Elly Exline dished out seven assists.

The Quakers had 16 total assists and forced 22 turnovers. They beat up Lakeview on the boards 36-17.

Lakeview finishes the season 10-13.
