State appears likely for Robb, Klem and Stackpole

CLEVELAND — It appears as if several area swimmers will be making a splash at the Div. II state swimming meet.

West Branch freshman Jamyson Robb, Crestview freshman Jordan Stackpole and Crestview junior Rebekah Klem are all in position to grab one of 16 at-large bids in various events after the Div. II district championships held on Friday at Cleveland State University.

Only the top two finishers in each district event qualify automatically for the Div. II state meet set for Thursday and Friday at Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium. Sixteen other state qualifying positions in each individual and relay event are determined on an at-large basis from the best statewide district times.

Robb and Klem should be thoroughly over the line for state qualification in the 100 breaststroke. Robb was fourth in the Northeast District in a time of 1:06.29. Only two other competitors who were not automatic qualifiers in other districts had better times than Robb. Klem was fifth at the Northeast District meet in a time of 1:08.08. There were two better at-large times than hers in the Northeast and Central districts each and six in the Southwest district. The Northwest District did not produce a better at-large time.

Robb also had a strong sixth place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:13.59). Due to an exceptionally strong Southwest District which produced 10 at-large times better than hers, it appears she will not be among the competitors in Canton in that event.

Klem was also 18th in the 100 freestyle (56.8).

Stackpole’s best chance for going to the state meet is in the 200 freestyle where he was 11th (1:49.92). It appears as if this will be enough to qualify for the state meet as there were eight better at-large times in the Northeast District and six better at-large times in the Southwest District. The Northwest and Central district meets did not produce a better time outside of the first two finishers.

Stackpole was also 11th in the 100 butterfly (54.94), but will be just outside of the cut-off for at-large bids for state in that event.

Columbiana freshman Jocelyn Buchheit was 19th in the 200 freestyle (2:06.28) and 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.61).

Salem’s Marly Zeigler took 29th in the 200 freestyle (2:10.61) and 29th in the 500 freestyle (6:02.10).

South Range’s River Flatley took 25th in the 100 backstroke (1:03.3) and 26th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.87).

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will officially announce state qualifiers today.
