Fowler widens points lead

Walker Fowler, a 2011 graduate of Columbiana High School, recently won the eighth round of the GNCC AMA national series Saturday at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Snowshoe, W.Va.

Chris Borich took the early lead with Fowler close behind. Two miles in, Fowler took the lead and maintained the lead for the remaining two-hour race, opening up an insurmountable three-minute lead.

Fowler has won seven of the eight rounds of the GNCC race series at this point and has a 76-point lead with five races remaining. The next race will be the John Penton race in Millfield, Ohio, on July 8.

Florida beats LSU for first national title

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull away from LSU, and the Gators beat their Southeastern Conference rival 6-1 Tuesday night to complete a two-game sweep in the College World Series finals for their first national title in baseball.

The Gators (52-19) posted the eighth sweep in the 15 years of the best-of-three finals format, and first since 2013. LSU (52-20) lost for the first time in seven appearances in a championship game.

Freshman Tyler Dyson (4-0) limited the Tigers to three hits in six innings in only his second start, and the Gators capitalized on LSU errors in the first and second innings to go up 2-0 against Jared Poche (12-4).

Things got interesting after Michael Byrne relieved Dyson in the seventh. LSU pulled to 2-1 and would have tied it if not for Jake Slaughter being called for runner interference at second base for sliding into shortstop Dalton Guthrie’s leg as he was throwing to first to turn a double play. Josh Smith, who had run home, was sent back to third, and Beau Jordan flew out to end the inning.

Father of LSU star pitcher revives man at CWS

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — It has been a busy College World Series for Dr. Jerry Poche’, the father of star LSU pitcher Jared Poche’.

A family doctor who has been in private practice for 25 years, Poche’ has tended to four people during this year’s CWS: A 6-year-old boy who was hit in the forehead by a foul ball, a fan with a bug in his ear, a man who passed out from apparent dehydration and, in a dramatic scene Monday night, reviving an 87-year-old fan who had apparently suffered a heart attack and was found at the stadium with no pulse.

“I’m just watching the game, and someone comes up and says, ‘Hey, man, we need you again,'” Poche’ said a day later with a laugh. “Whatever. I do what I got to do.”

Poche’ was in Section 117 when he was summoned by Kellie Freeman, mother of LSU second baseman Cole Freeman, in the sixth inning of Game 1 against Florida on Monday night. The elderly man was slumped on the TD Ameritrade Park concourse.

“I see an older gentleman being held up by his family, and they said he’s weak,” Poche’ said Tuesday. “He wasn’t weak. He didn’t have a pulse, and he had (laboring) respirations. He was dying.”

Nebraska Medical Center spokesman Taylor Wilson said the man, who was not identified, was in good condition. He did not want to speak with the media, Wilson said, but his family was very appreciative of the effort to help save him.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Chase Elliott has signed a four-year contract extension to drive for Hendrick Motorsports through 2022.

Elliott originally signed with Hendrick Motorsports as a development driver in February 2011 as a 15-year-old high school freshman. He replaced Jeff Gordon last year in the Cup Series and was the top rookie. Elliott qualified for the playoffs and had 10 top-five finishes and 17 top-10s. He also won two poles, including the season-opening Daytona 500.

He is currently sixth in the Cup standings, but still seeking his first series victory.

Elliott is the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott.
