AROUND THE HORN

Beachy is a Struthers legend

STRUTHERS — They are still talking about Bonnie Beachy after leading the Struthers girls basketball team to the 1978 state championship.

Beachy died at her home in Houston Friday after a lengthy battle with cervical cancer.

The Associated Press Ohio Player of the Year in 1978, Beachy remains the career scoring leader at Struthers High School (1,448 points) and Kent State University (2,071 points).

At Kent State, she earned four letters in basketball and three in tennis. Her No. 13 jersey number was retired, the only woman at Kent State to have received that honor.

Fowler wins 11th of season

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Walker Fowler won his last two races, raising his season total to a record 11 in the Grand National Cross Country Series.

Fowler, a 2011 graduate of Columbiana High School, raced his ATV to victory at Masontown, W.Va., on Sept. 23 and at St. Clairsville on Oct. 7.

His 11th victory broke the season record held by Chris Borich and Kailub Russell.

Marty Christopherson captured the hole shot but Fowler made a quick pass to lead the pro class into the woods. Fowler gave up the lead briefly at the FMF powerpoint to Jarrod McClure, but quickly regained it after McClure took a wrong turn on the track just after the pro pit area. Fowler lead every lap and won by a margin of 53 seconds over Chris Borich and Brycen Neal in third.

Immediately following the ATV race, Fowler and mechanic Mark Notman climbed aboard their YXZ 1000 UTV and finished sixthth overall.

Penn State climbs to No. 2

(AP) – Penn State has climbed to No. 2 in The Associated Press College football poll behind unanimous No. 1 Alabama after a wild weekend of upsets gave the Top 25 a major makeover.

A season-high seven ranked teams, including four in the top 10, lost to unranked teams on Friday and Saturday. Defending national champion Clemson and defending Pac-12 champion Washington were the highest ranked teams to lose.

Penn State, which was idle, took advantage. The Nittany Lions moved up a spot to No. 2, 15 points ahead of No. 3 Georgia. Penn State has its best ranking since Oct. 31, 1999, when the Nittany Lions were No. 2. Alabama, which has been No. 1 since the preseason, received all 61 first-place votes for the first time this year.

TCU is No. 4, Wisconsin is No. 5 and Big Ten rival Ohio State is sixth.

Giants handle Broncos

DENVER (AP) — Eli Manning ignored the loss of four wide receivers, and the reeling New York Giants capped a stormy week of injuries and infighting by stunning the Denver Broncos 23-10 on Sunday night.

The Giants (1-5) pulled off one of the season’s biggest upsets by dominating Denver in every phase from start to finish. The Broncos (3-2) blew a golden opportunity to close in on Kansas City in the AFC West after the Steelers knocked off the last unbeaten team in the league earlier Sunday.

Visiting teams went 8-5 in Week 6 and are 46-44 overall this upside-down NFL season.

Akron wins on Sunday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Thomas Woodson threw a TD pass, Manny Morgan ran in another score and Akron held off Western Michigan 14-13 on Sunday. The homecoming game was supposed to be played Saturday but was postponed because of heavy rain and lightning. Woodson made it 7-0 with a 13-yard pass to Kobie Booker in the opening quarter. Morgan’s 1-yard run in the second period gave the Zips (4-3, 3-0 Mid-Atlantic Conference) a 14-0 lead.

Sharapova back in win column

TIANJIN, China (AP) — Maria Sharapova won her first WTA title since returning from a doping ban after defeating Aryna Sabalenka to win the Tianjin Open on Sunday.

The Russian, a tournament wild card, overcame Belarusian teenager Sabalenka 7-5, 7-6 (8) despite trailing heavily in both sets.

Sharapova last won a title at the Italian Open in May 2015.

The former top-ranked player and owner of five major titles, including the 2006 U.S. Open, tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium at the Australian Open in January 2016. That led to a 15-month doping ban.
