Crestview opens tournament by pounding Wellsville

COLUMBIANA — Crestview and Wellsville competed in a first-round sectional contest Tuesday in a year of firsts for both teams.

Crestview finished its first regular season as an independent and Wellsville finished its first full year of play.

Crestview beat a young Wellsville team 12-0 in the Tigers first sectional match in program history.

Crestview is coming off of a 1-1 draw with Division I New Philadelphia to end its first regular season as an independent.

“During the season it was a tough year because of the schedule, but we are confident in our play,” Crestview coach Johnathan Kinkead said. “We scrimmaged a few teams in the bracket, but the competition we played this year was a step above us and we feel that has prepared us for this year.”

Crestview started the scoring when Scott Murray scored off a Dale McGoogan pass with 34:11 left in the first half.

“I knew coming into this season it was going to be difficult but it has prepared us for the tournaments,” Crestview’s Scott Murray said. “The challenge of this season has made this team better as a unit.”

Crestview followed up that goal when Matt Jennings connected with Murray for his second goal at the 28:34 mark in the first half.

Tanner Daub crossed the ball from the right side of the field and found Crestview’s leading scorer Mitchell Lindsay to put the Rebels up 3-0 in the first half.

“We tried a lot of formations this year,” Kinkead said. “It was like musical chairs this year trying to find that winning combination.”

Luke Wickline scored off a pass from Mitchell Lindsay making it 4-0 rebels.

“We have 30 guys on this team and so many of them are capable starters.” Kinkead said. “We typically play a 4-5-1 formation, but there were games we played 4-4-2 and games we played 3-5-2.”

The other goals in the first half came from another Lindsay goal and Jeff Roberts added another, giving the Rebels a 6-0 lead at the half.

“Wellsville held their composure extremely well for the first road sectional game for the program,” Kinkead said “I’m personally proud of the program because I know how difficult it is because I was with the first year of Crestview soccer sixteen years ago.”

Johnathan DeJane had 10 saves in goal for Wellsville.

“Nothing but positives this season,” Wellsville coach Cary Lemasters said. “Seeing how each kid develops and learns throughout the year is what its all about.”

Wellsville finished their inaugural season at 2-13-1.

“We had no seniors, so everybody is coming back and everyone is anxious to do indoor this winter and train,” Lemasters said.

“We got two wins this year which were huge and we have a lot of kids talking about coming out next year so the future of Wellsville soccer looks bright.”

The Crestview second half was highlighted by three goals from Gorka Lazpiur.

The Rebels also saw goals from Colton Novak and a second goal from Luke Wickline.

Crestview is 6-9-2 on the season and will host East Palestine at 3 p.m. Saturday in a sectional final.

“I think we’ve become closer as a team this season and we have a real good chance to make it out of districts,” Murray said.
