Rebels find a way to thwart Indian Creek
COLUMBIANA — Crestview is making a late-season run.
The Rebels came up with five turnovers to turn back Indian Creek, 28-25, in a thriller Friday night.
Both teams are 5-4 on the season with the Rebels winning their last three games.
Quarterback Caleb Hill had 174 yards of offense in the first half to get the Rebels on their way.
Ethan Powell had 81 of his 83 yards rushing in the second half. Hill totaled 83 yards on 11 carries and added 137 yards rushing.
Andrew Yanssens had a strong second half with two touchdown runs. He finished with 56 yards on 19 carries after being held to 6 yards on 10 first-half attempts.
After playing to a 13-13 tie in the first half, the Redskins went ahead midway through the third quarter as Devin Eakle’s 14-yard catch from Brennon Norris made it 19-13.
Crestview went back on top on an Andrew Yanssens 7-yard run and Brandon Yanssen’s extra-point kick made it 20-19 with 13 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.
Cody Allan’s 1-yard run gave Indian Creek a 25-20 lead with only 4:15 to play in the game.
The Rebels then took control, scoring on Andrew Yanssens’ 9-yard run with only 1:59 to play. He also ran for the two-point conversion to give the Rebels a 28-25 lead.
The first half also was back and forth.
The Rebels drove 75 yards on 12 plays to score on the opening possession. Hill completed four 9-yard passes and ran for 22 yards and an 11-yard touchdown only 3:57 into the contest.
Indian Creek came right back as Will Hopkins returned the kickoff 91 yards to the Rebel 1-yard line. Trevor Fante scored on the next play and Brandon Hiles added the PAT as the Redskins took a 7-6 lead with 7:49 to play in the first quarter.
A 56-yard punt by Dylan Huff turned the field position . Wyatt Woodring recovered a fumble and Huff had an interception to give the Rebels the ball back at their own 28-yard line.
Two plays later, Jeff Feo took a pass from Hill across the middle and raced 69 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Brandon Yanssens’ kick made it 13-7.
Indian Creek scored right before halftime as Devon Eakle made a diving 20-yard touchdown catch to tie the score at 13-13 with 15 seconds left in the first half.
• Crestview converted two fourth-and-1 plays in their own territory on their last possession of the first half, but eventually had to punt. The Redskins took only five plays to drive 68 yards for the tying score.
• Norris completed 25 of 39 passes for 268 yards, but Indian Creek was held to 19 yards rushing on 20 attempts.
• Crestview controlled the first half. Indian Creek had the ball for only 8:19 and 24 offensive plays.
• The Redskins were coming off a 38-0 win over Beaver Local last week.
