Clippers survive Lisbon

Columbiana's Taylor Hall goes for a layup as Lisbon's Hailee Carpenter (4) and Alyssa Chestnut (24) look on Monday.

LISBON — Another chapter in the Columbiana and Lisbon girls basketball rivalry went down on Monday night and it did not disappoint.

A Taylor Hall steal and Kayla Muslovski layup with 10 seconds remaining was the difference as Columbiana edged Lisbon 49-47.

“Lisbon always plays tough,” Columbiana coach Ron Moschella said. “We play tough. This is always a great game.”

Columbiana improves to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Lisbon falls to 3-2 and 2-1 in the league.

Columbiana got the ball back to run out the clock after Lisbon failed to get the ball inbounds after the Muslovski basket.

“This was a tough loss for us,” Lisbon coach Jamie Entrikin said. “We are a young team and being in situations like this will only help us grow.”

“I’m proud of my kids they left everything they had out on the floor.”

Lisbon led 47-45 with less than a minute left in the game when Columbiana’s Muslovski found an open Alexis Cross to tie to the game.

“We’ve been behind like this before,” Cross said. “I’m glad our team was mentally tough to come back and finish this game.

“We had a lot of mental mistakes but hopefully we will grow from this game.”

Cross and Muslovski both finished with 14 points for the Clippers. Muslovski added five steals and Tessa Liggett four assists.

Columbiana did have a 42-36 lead mid-fourth quarter but Lisbon made a 6-0 run thanks to a Perez three-pointer followed by layups from Hailee Carpenter and Maddie Liberati.

“Columbiana does a great job running the press,” Entrikin said. “We moved the ball well tonight but we will get better.”

Izzy Perez led the Blue Devils with 17 points, five assists and five steals.

“She can do a little bit of everything,” Entrikin said. “She worked really hard this offseason on her outside shot and with her driving ability makes her a big threat.”

Lisbon’s Maddie Liberati had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.

“She did well inside tonight,” Entrikin said. “She is still young and learning.”

In the second quarter Lisbon was down 24-17 before going on a 8-0 run off an Alyssa Chesnut three and Perez had an and one followed by another driving layup on the next possesion.

Lisbon also saw a solid contribution Autumn Oehlstrom, who had five points with seven rebounds.

“This game was a good challenge for us,” Cross said. “It’s good to play some challenging teams so hopefully we can get out of the districts this year.”

Columbiana got nine points from Kennedy Fullum and seven points from Taylor Hall.

“Good teams find ways to win,” Entrikin said.

Columbiana will host Wellsville on Thursday, while Lisbon travels to Toronto.
