Eagles soar past Bears

HANOVERTON — Loren Swords and Celeste Hofmeister each scored 17 points in leading United past Leetnonia, 53-43, Monday.

United improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Cameron Pierson added seven points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

Leading 25-24 at halftime, United outscored Leetonia 14-8 in the third quarter and 14-11 in the fourth quarter.

Kayla Jackson paced the Bears with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Ari Russell scored 10 points and Sydney Mesmer seven. Sabrina Schneider had six assists.

United also won the junior varsity game, 43-18, as Celeste Powers scored 17 points in two quarters of action. Taran Ferry had six points for the Bears.

Both teams play Thursday as United visits Southern Local and Leetonia hosts East Palestine.

Western Reserve 71, Lowellville 31

BERLIN CENTER–The Western Reserve girls basketball team ran its record to 5-0 with a 71-31 win over Lowellville in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference action Monday.

Alyssa Serensky tallied 14 points, four steals and five rebounds for the Blue Devils, while Laura Sigworth had 13 points and six rebounds. Erica DeZee added 12 points.

Kennedy Miller dished out six assists.

Western Reserve won the jayvee game 73-16. Nicci DiCioccio had 17 points to lead the Blue Devils.

Western Reserve is at Springfield Thursday.

SEBRING — Springfield outscored Sebring a combined 36-8 in the first and third quarters on the way to a 61-35 win Monday.

Mariah Johnson scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the second half, while Haley LaMorticella had 10 of her 13 points in the first half to top the balanced Tigers. Ellie Centofanti added 11 points and Marie Applegarth 10.

Sebring got 12 points from Emma Whaley and 10 from Olivia Woods.

Both teams will play Thursday as Springfield hosts Western Reserve and Sebring entertains Lowellville.

Southern 47, Wellsville 36

WELLSVILLE — Southern Local needed an 11-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from Wellsville, 47-36, Monday.

Anna Sevek led the Indians with a game-high 22 points and seven assists. Riley Felton contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Michael made five steals.

For the Tigers, Menina Jackson had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Carlevale added eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hunter Weekley dished out three assists.

Southern improves to 5-1 and 2-1 in league play, while Wellsville drops to 3-4 and 1-2.

In the junior varsity game, Wellsville gave up just two points in the second half for a 31-14 win. Dehaven Dobritz led the way with nine points.

Both teams play Thursday as Southern hosts United and Wellsville travels to unbeaten Columbiana.
