Eagles start strong

HANOVERTON–United took down Lisbon 66-56 in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball opener Tuesday.

The Eagles improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the EOAC. Lisbon drops to 2-1, 0-1.

Parker Hydrick United with 23 points, while Kaden Smith scored nine points in the fourth quarter to finish with 21. Alex Birtalan pulled down nine rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Justin Sweeney powered the Blue Devils with 27 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Branson Brownfield added 16 points and eight rebounds.

United won the jayvee game 46-33. Brutus Ogilvie had 19 points for the Eagles. Joey Fisher had 11 points for Lisbon.

United is at Toronto Friday. Lisbon hosts East Palestine Friday.

SALINEVILLE–The Southern boys basketball team overpowered Leetonia 82-70 in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference opener Tuesday.

Jacob Joiner led a balanced scoring effort for the Indians with 16 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Leetonia got a monster effort from Roman Ferry with 41 points.

Also for Southern, Jayce Sloan notched 11 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Dominic Pugliano added 16 points, while Cam Grodhaus had 14 points. Max Hart had 11 points and two blocks.

Brock Simpson added eight points for the Bears.

Southern won the jayvee game 45-26. Brock Smalley had 12 points for the Indians.

Southern hosts Columbiana Friday.

EAST PALESTINE–East Palestine won a close contest with Columbiana 72-68 in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action Tuesday night in East Palestine.

Brandon Kemp had 20 points and Dominic Posey had 19 points to lead East Palestine.

For Columbiana, Erik Hopfenziz had 23 points and Jared Wilson had 21 points.

Hofenziz had five 3-point field goals for the Clippers.

Both teams continue league play as Columbiana travels to Southern and East Palestine travels to Lisbon on Friday.

WELLSVILLE–The Wellsville boys basketball team hung on for a 53-48 victory over Toronto in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference opener Tuesday.

The Tigers improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the EOAC, while Toronto drops to 1-1, 0-1.

Wellsville’s leading scorers were Darien Suggs and Garrett Scott with 14 points each. Derrick Suggs added 11 points and five assists. Cameron Davis was the Tigers’ leading rebounder with 10 to go with five assists and four points. Brandon Patterson had six points and five rebounds.

Toronto won the jayvee game 46-39. Luke Green led the Tigers with 25 points.

Wellsville continues league play on Friday at Leetonia.

Heartland 35

CANTON — Heritage Christian raced to a 94-35 win over Heartland Christian on Tuesday.

Steven Baker had 10 points for the Lions.

Angelo Milini had 35 points for the winners.

Heritage won the jayvee game, 45-17.

Heartland is at Jackson-Milton on Friday.
