Osborn given top honor

MOUNT VERNON — Heartland Christian graduate and Mount Vernon Nazarene University junior Kristen Osborn was recently named to the College Sports Information Directors of America volleyball Academic All-America first team.

Osborn had a 4.0 GPA while majoring in biology and was one of seven athletes named to the first team. She was also the first Mount Vernon Nazarene athlete to gain first team Academic All-American status.

In addition to first team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, Osborn, an outside hitter from Salem, was also recently announced as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and member of the second team All-Crossroads League in 2017. It was the third consecutive season Osborn earned postseason Crossroads League accolades, after being named to the first team All-Crossroads League as a freshman and sophomore. Despite missing a few matches over the final stretch of the season, Osborn finished fourth in the Crossroads League in total kills (400), first in kills per set (3.3), and No. 7 in hitting percentage (0.236).

Not only did Osborn surpass the 1,000 career kill mark in 2017, but also the 1,000 career dig milestone, contributing defensively to the Cougar cause with 345 digs (2.9 per set), which ranked No. 17 in the Crossroads League.

“Kristen is just a top notch person in all aspects,” said Mount Vernon Nazarene coach Paul Swanson. “She is a great person and personality, possesses high character, is an outstanding athlete and a very bright student. Kristen is very much deserving of this award.”
