Warriors on the defensive

BELOIT — Opponents have no chance against West Branch’s defense.

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in the Division II state poll, blanked Austintown Fitch in the first quarter on the way to 54-32 win Monday.

West Branch improves to 14-0 overall, while Fitch drops to 9-7.

The Warriors led 12-0 in the first quarter and 20-6 at halftime.

West Branch’s defense has surrendered a total of only 25 first-half points in wins over Minerva, Salem and Fitch during a six-day stretch.

On Monday, the Warrior offense had balance with three players scoring in double figures. Kayla Horvoka totaled 17 points and nine rebounds, Peyton Alazaus 12 points and Natalie Zuchowski 10 points and nine rebounds. Hannah Ridgway added eight points.

The Warriors also won the junior varsity game, 43-24.

West Branch will play at Carrollton on Saturday.

HANOVERTON — United held Southern to eight points our less in every quarter on the way to a 30-26 win Monday.

The Eagles improve to 8-7 overall and 7-3 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, tied for second place with Lisbon.

Molly Briceland led the Eagles with nine points and six rebounds. Celeste Hofmesiter added seven points and Cameron Pierson grabbed six rebounds. Loren Swords played a big part despite not scoring a point, holding Southern leader Anna Sevek to four points and dishing out four assists.

Stella Ruby Karcher topped the Indians with eight points.

United also won the junior varsity game, 30-7, to up its mark to 14-1, Kendyl Daggy and Madison Boyle each had six points for the Eagles.

United will host East Liverpool on Wednesday, while Southern entertains East Palestine on Thursday.

EAST PALESTINE — Ari Russell had 17 points, while Kayla Jackson added 11 points as Leetonia downed East Palestine 41-38 on Monday in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference game.

Anna Buffone added 10 points for the Bears.

Alisha Dean sparked East Palestine with 14 points.

East Palestine won the jayvee portion, 43-33. Joclyn Fristik had 11 points for East Palestine.

BERLIN CENTER –Laura Sigworth had 16 points as Western Reserve took down Waterloo 50-43 on Monday night.

Western Reserve is 13-4 and 9-2 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference.

Alexis Hughes added 12 points and five assists.

Western Reserve won the jayvee game, 71-8. Olivia Pater had 13 points for the winners.

TORONTO — Lisbon’s girls basketball team downed Toronto 71-31 on Monday in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference game.

Izzy Perez had 22 points for the winners, 8-6, 7-3. She added 10 steals and nine assists.

Chloe Smith chipped in 14 points, while Maddie Liberati had 13 points.

Lisbon won the jayvee game, 33-31. Calee Steed had eight points for Lisbon.

Lisbon is at Leetonia on Thursday.
