Beaver Local gangs up on Blue Devils

CALCUTTA — The Beaver Local girls stuck to its defensive game plan and picked up a solid late season win over Lisbon, 57-34, Monday.

“The last couple days of practice we have been working on our zone defense,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “We knew that Maddie Liberati was their best post player and we wanted to push her out.”

“They did a great job of executing that defense tonight.”

Beaver Local is 10-11. Lisbon drops to 12-9.

“We handled the ball well all night,” Beaver Local’s Jenna Riccardo said. “We worked on our trapping and wanted to take Liberati out of the game.”

The Beavers held Liberati to seven points which all came in the first half.

The Beavers went into the locker room with a four-point lead 28-24, but came out in the third to play.

“We lacked intensity in the first half,” Riccardo said. “In the second half we picked it up and were playing great defense.”

The Beavers outscored the Blue Devils 17-1 in the third frame to take a 45-25 lead in to the fourth.

Riccardo led the Beavers in scoring with 17 points and teammate Kierra Taylor followed suit with 16 points.

The second half Beaver Local outscored Lisbon 29-10 in ways to victory.

“We did a lot in transition off of our defense to create our offense,” Coie said. “We were moving the ball well and this was a great team win.”

The Blue Devils were led by Izzy Perez with 13 points and six steals.

“We didn’t play very well,” Lisbon coach Jamie Entrikin said. “We’ve been practicing well and getting better but tonight it didn’t show.”

Liberati helped the Blue Devils on the boards with seven rebounds. Chloe Smith contributed six points and seven rebounds. Cadee Johnson had six rebounds.

“Second half they were hitting shots and forcing us to spread out a little bit,” Entrikin said. “They did a great job executing.”

Beaver Local’s Madison Cline also contributed 12 points.

Beaver Local will travel to Wellsville on Wednesday. Lisbon will host United on Thursday.

NOTES

• With tournament time approaching, 10th-seeded Beaver Local will host 12th-seeded Steubenville in Div II. East District sectional action on February 21. Seventh-seeded Lisbon will host 10th-seeded Lowellville in Div. IV Mineral Ridge district sectional on February 21.

“We match up well with Steubenville,” Coie said. “It’s a nice team and I think we have a really good shot against them.”

“I like where we are at in the tournament,” Entrikin said. “We have one more tune up game and we are going to play as hard as we can. We will see what happens.”

• Beaver Local honored three seniors prior to the game on senior night (Kierra Taylor, Tanner Yergin and Kaylee Gump).

“They are a great group of girls,” Coie said. “All three of them are leaders for our kids. Tanner and Kaylee are great leaders at practice. They are great young ladies and they have bright futures.”

• In jayvee action, Lisbon won 30-15.

For Lisbon, Callie Steed had 12 points and Corinne Freeman had nine points.

For Beaver Local, Brooke Briggs had five points.
