Indians could win first title since ‘77

COLUMBUS — No area team is ranked in the latest Associated Press high school football poll, but league titles and playoff berths still hang in the balance heading into the final week of the regular season.

Southern Local, United and Columbiana are tied at top of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference with 5-1 marks with two of the teams on the verge of ending long league title droughts Friday.

Southern (9-1) travels to Leetonia (4-5) with the winner clinching a playoff berth. The Indians haven’t won a league title since 1977, while Bears broke their 36-game league losing streak with a 10-7 victory at Wellsville last Friday.

United (8-2) plays at Lisbon (3-6) as the Eagles seek their first league title since 1999. The Eagles and Blue Devils have played every year since 1963 with United holding a 29-26 series advantage.

Columbiana (5-4) will entertain East Palestine as the Clippers play for league title and a winning season. The Clippers, who won their last league title in 2015, have posted winning records in 15 of the last 18 seasons.

Crestview (6-3) will host Wheeling Linsly on Friday and can clinch a Division V playoff berth with a win. The Rebels are scoring an average of 36.4 points a game.

East Liverpool, Salem, South Range, Springfield and Lisbon also have slim playoff hopes, but need help.

The first Eastern Buckeye Conference title will be decided Friday when Alliance (6-3) entertains Marlington (8-1) at Mount Union Stadium. Both teams are 5-0 in league play and two games ahead of West Branch. Marlington, coming off a 28-20 win over West Branch last Friday, is ranked 19th in the Division III state poll.

McDonald (9-0), which handled Western Reserve 21-6 Friday, is ranked seventh in Division VI. McDonald has clinched at least a share of its second straight Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference title and can claim a playoff spot with a win over Lowellville on Friday.

Also in Division VI, fourth-ranked Mogadore (8-1) will host fifth-ranked Rootstown (9-0) on Friday.

Canfield (8-1), ranked third in Division III, will host Poland (6-3) on Friday. Canfield has already clinched a playoff spot, while Poland can advance with a win.

In the biggest rivalry in Ohio, Canton McKinley (9-0) will play at Massillon (9-0) on Saturday. Division I No. 6 Canton McKinley and Division II No. 3 both have clinched playoff berths

In Division IV, Hubbard (9-0) and Steubenville (8-1) are ranked third and fourth, respectively. Both teams have wrapped up home games in the playoff openers and will end the regular season Friday with Hubbard hosting upstart Youngstown East and Steubenville entertaining University School.

St. Clairsville (9-0) is ranked sixth after a 41-40 double-overtime win at South Range on Friday. The Red Devils have clinched the top seed in Region 15 heading into Friday’s home game against Cleveland JFK.
