Quakers advance with strong second half

SALEM — Salem’s girls soccer team came on strong in the second half to blank Ursuline 4-0 on Monday in a Div. II sectional opener at Reilly Stadium.

Salem (12-4-1) will be at second-seeded Lakeview (14-1-1) on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start. The Quakers scored all four of their goals after halftime.

Lydia McKee led the Quakers with two goals, while Haley Gaither and Ellie Davidson each added one goal. Gaither, Leila Bailey and Abby Perry all had one assist.

The Salem defense was led by Zoee Moore and Bailee Thorn (two saves) on the way to recording their ninth shutout of the season.

The Quakers snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.

Columbiana 1,

Valley Christian 0

COLUMBIANA–Emily Starkey scored the winning goal in the second half to lead the Columbiana girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Valley Christian in a Div. III sectional opener Monday. The Clippers are at top-seeded Lordstown at 5 p.m. Thursday for a sectional final.

South Range 8, Leetonia 1

GREENFORD — South Range’s girls soccer team started off the tournament with an 8-1 win over Leetonia on Monday in a Div. III sectional opener.

The Raiders move to 10-7 and will host Newton Falls on Thursday in the sectional final.

Carrollton 3, East Liverpool 2

CARROLLTON — Lexi Danley scored twice but it wasn’t enough as East Liverpoool’s girls soccer team bowed out of the Div. II sectional tournament with a 3-2 loss to Carrollton on Monday.

MacKenzie McKinnon had an assist for the Potters, 2-14.

Alessandra Ferrazzano had 13 saves in goal.

Carrollton will travel to top seed River View at 6 p.m. on Wednesday for the sectional final.

Minerva 2, Morgan 0

MCCONNELSILLE — Minerva’s girls soccer team bested Morgan 2-0 on Monday in a Div. II sectional opener.

Minerva will travel to John Glenn at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday for the sectional final.

Rootstown at Crestview

COLUMBIANA — Due to standing water on the field, Monday’s Div. III Rootstown at Crestview girls sectional soccer opener was postponed.

It will be played at 7 p.m. today at South Range High School’s field.
