United Eagles break title drought
LISBON — A little rain wasn’t going to slow United senior Ethan Antram and his Golden Eagles in their quest for the program’s first league title in 19 years.
Antram went over 1,000 yards on the season as he ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries in United’s 26-0 win over Lisbon on Friday night.
United won its fifth in a row as the Eagles finished at 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, sharing the league title with Southern Local and Columbiana. The Eagles won all five of their road games this season
It was United first league title since 1999, when D.J. Ogilvie was head coach in his first stint with the Eagles.
After a 2-0 start, Lisbon finished at 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the EOAC. The Blue Devils scored 82 points in their first two games before injuries hit and they managed 41 points over their last eight games.
United had 355 yards of total offense, compared to 66 yards for Lisbon.
Most of Lisbon’s offense came on Logan Bell’s quarterback keeper that went for 22 yards on a third-and-long play late in the second quarter.
Landon Baker and Antram combined on a third-down sack to stop Lisbon on the opening possession and the Eagles were off and running.
Antram had a diving 32-yard reception from Brutus Ogilvie to the Lisbon 8-yard line. On the next play, United quarterback Bodey Kiko dragged the pile into the end zone to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead with 7:53 left in the first quarter.
Antram scored on a 4-yard run on the second play of the quarter to make it 12-0.
Behind United’s strong offensive line, Antram had touchdown runs of 43 and 25 yards in the second half along with a two-point conversion.
• The first half took 45 minutes to play. For the game, the teams combined for nine passes and six penalties.
• It was good to see Lisbon senior Justin Sweeney dressed for his last game. He missed the final eight games with a knee injury.
• The teams have played every year since 1963 with United holding a 30-26 series advantage.
