Quakers drop opener

SALEM–The Salem girls basketball team came away from Monday’s season opener with a hard-fought 52-50 loss to Poland at Cabas Gymnasium.

Casey Johnson led the Quakers with 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Echo Mayer-Kutz added 11 points, while Kyla Jamison had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jaden Hamilton contributed nine points. Ellie Davidson finished with six points and eight rebounds. Both teams shot better than 45 percent from the field for the game and better than 42 percent from three-point range.

Poland won the jv game 35-27. Abby Perry led the Quakers with nine points and seven rebounds. Krista Barley added eight points and four steals.

The Quakers are at Niles Thursday.

Sebring 46, Heartland 40

SEBRING — Sebring earned its first win of the campaign by topping Heartland 46-40 on Monday in girls basketball action.

Abi D’Ostroph had 13 points to lead the Trojans, 1-1. Emma Whaley tacked on 11 points.

Madison Matthews led Heartland with 19 points. Sarah Adkins had 13 boards.

Heartland is at Badger on Thursday.

Sebring plays Thursday at home against Leetonia.

BERLIN CENTER — Western Reserve opened its girls basketball season with a 73-35 win over East Palestine on Monday night.

Alyssa Serensky had 17 points to lead the Blue Devils. South Range High School transfer Dani Vuletich added 16 points and eight rebounds. Laura Sigworth had 11 points while Kennedy Miller chipped in nine assists and five steals.

Kenzee Johnston had 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Western Reserve won the jayvee portion 36-18. Olivia Altiere had nine points for the winners.

Western Reserve hosts Warren JFK on Thursday.

LISBON — Izzy Perez had 23 points, eight assists and five steals as Lisbon downed Valley Christian 72-52 on Monday.

Maddie Liberati added 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Chloe Smith had nine points and eight rebounds.

Lisbon is 1-1 and is at Springfield on Thursday.

Lisbon won the jayvee game 42-14 behind eight points from Tabby Ketchum. Ellie Emmerling added five points.
